Or is it that the Alienware 15 $1099 is better? http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-15-r2/pd?oc=dkcwf01bc&model_id=alienware-15-r2

Factors

  • Portability is a huge factor.
Performance is also a huge factor.

Solution
desktop is always better price/performance ratio.
GTX 965M is considerably slower than GTX 970.

Personally I´d pick the desktop, even if its more hassle to move around, the comfort of a real monitor, keyboard, mouse is more important and so is upgradability.

Well, for portability, the laptop. You can just whip it out and use it, where you have to find a power outlet for the PC regardless. For performance, the PC is obviously more powerful. It has a full GTX 970 compared to the cut down 965M, as well as the 6600 in the PC and the 6300HQ in the laptop, which will be way more susceptible to thermal throttling. And you're probably having an extra $50-$100 tacked on for just the Alienware logo. But, you will have the monitor included on the laptop, as well as not need a plug unless you're charging. So, on a portability factor, definitely a laptop. Unless it's a super beefed up workstation laptop, they mostly won't come close to the performance of a work/gaming grade desktop.
