Which cpu would perform better alongside a Radeon HD 7850 2gb for gaming: A pentium g3258 or an AMD fx-6300?

I'm trying to decide because I've heard the g3258 is great for it's price and good for overclocking but I've also heard that it is limited by only having 2 cores

In my opinion, I would choose this CPU + Motherboard combo (You can OC the H97 Fatal1ty):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor ($62.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($95.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $158.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

And upgrade to an i5 whenever you have the budget for it. It's really the best way since the G3258 already performs very good, often close and sometimes better than the FX-6300.

Realistically it's like this

1.) Games that are low thread tasks utilizing one or two threads maximum will perform moderately better with the Pentium.

2.) Games that utilize more than two threads, or in some cases require quad core or above will benefit from the FX chip ranging from mildly to indefinitely.

Alright, thanks man. I think im gonna go with the pentium because most of my favorite games are a bit older and even if I wanted to play some of the ones that require quad cores I heard you can get patches for that.

Yeah exactly. You can always run them.

If you're going to overclock, perhaps buying an aftermarket CPU cooler would be wise.

Make sure to look up tutorials on how to OC the H97 Fatal1ty motherboard, otherwise you might not understand how. It's called '''Non-Z OC''.
