i bought this i7 4790k and with an h97-d3h micro atx motherboard from gigabyte. i am currently running at 4.4ghz and i locked the processor speed so it cant throttle down, or disabled intel speed step. at 4.4 ghz i ran some stress tests like geekbench 3 and at most it wold get to like 90c and then it seems to be fine because the computer wouldnt shutdown. the voltages and everything is stable, but i dont think that this would be healthy for my cpu or does it really matter?

Hello... Internally the CPU will shut down @100C for self protection... But HEAT is directly related to the lifespan of electronics... Not just your CPU is running at 90c but the other things in your case will see higher temperatures too... a better cooler is always recommended here for any Overclocking... And there are better and low cost options here for you other than a stock-OEM cooler.

The stock cooler isn't very good unless you aren't overclocking. Clearly you are though so a cheap alternative would be a CM 212 Evo. I wouldn't want my i7 to be at 90 degrees because it probably will degrade the chips lifespan.

by how many months/ years do you think it would degrade the lifespan on?

The K chip is pretty much already overclocked, and since you've disabled speed step, it is going to a little warm constantly. I would say the stock cooler is barely adequate. Plenty of cheap $30-40 coolers that will drop those maximum temps to 20C.

Cryorig H7 is a popular recommendation. Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212, Xigmatek Gaia, couple of others you can look into.
