HP Proliant dl360 G5 will not post

Hello, I have an HP Proliant dl360 g5 and it will not post. I have x2 Xeon 5150 and it works fine, But when I upgraded them too x2 Xeon 5420 the server is not posting, my screen is black and the fans are at full speed. The motherboard does support Quad core CPUs. I don't know what's happening here.

In document http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04284194.pdf you'll find a note about Upgradeability. Does the motherboard in your server support the upgrade to Xeon 5400 processors? I couldn't check since you didn't provide the mainboard part number. Are you sure the E5420 processors are good? I presume they are part number 457937-B21?

The board I have in my dl360 g5 is the 435949-001 board. It says this board will work with quadcore cpu's. Also i pulled these 5420's out of a dl360 g5.

It definitely should support the E5420. Is the latest firmware installed?

That's what I actually don't know. I have no idea where to get the firmware from. The bios firmware is on p58.

P58 (HP ProLiant DL360 G5) is the server model number. Since it's an HP server, you get it from HP: http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=1121420&swItemId=MTX_75580f5b91784d11b58f80d961&swEnvOid=4064 I presumed you're running 2008 R2, but it should work even if you use a different version.

If I were you I'd contact HP or your reseller who should be able to get the file for you. An alternate solution is to download the ISO file from ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/cd/p1040529012/v71197/firmware-10.10-0.zip and burn it to a DVD. I found this link at http://www.stephenwagner.com/?p=226 (see post #20) and the file still is available.

If all else fails, you could consider buying another motherboard that already supports the 5400 series processors (they cost very little).

I downloaded the iso and used a program to put it on my flash drive. When I ran the flash drive it said
"Could not find kernel image: HPFWUP1010/vesamenu.c32

I don't know if this is happening because im using a USB and not a disk. Thanks for the additional help!

Why don't you follow the instructions and burn the ISO to a DVD? You can't use a USB key on that server, but you can use an USB DVD drive.

Edit: Use ImgBurn or a similar application to burn the bootable DVD.
