Without my external hard drive plugged in, my computer post beeps within a couple of seconds, but with it plugged in it can take much longer and sometimes not post at all, but just sits there with the fans running.

It is a 2tb Western Digital 1021 USB Device, and it appears to be healthy and working fine otherwise.

I could plug it in only when I need to use it but I'd rather know what's causing it and be able to resolve it.

Hey there, Harold!

I'm really sorry to hear about your issues with the WD External drive! :( I'd recommend you to back up your data ASAP and run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tool for Windows (or DOS, since the external is causing slow bootups) to determine the accurate health and SMART status of the drive.
Here's a link to the WD Software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CaoQBr

I'd also recommend you to try connecting the drive to a different computer and see how it get recognized there. I might as well try using a different USB cable with it.

Keep me posted with the results.
