Is it possible for you pass on your Altec Lansing Speakers model number? There are a wide range of speakers launched by the reputable company and there are too many to narrow down in hopes of finding a schematics to their units.

Off the top of my head you could try and take it to a neighbor or a person down town to someone who is knowledgeable in rewiring such devices to make it run as though there is no potentiometer and the volume is adjusted directly from OS' volume controller. There is also a possibility you can wiggle the volume knob on the unit and nudge it to health and set it there after which you can adjust volume from the OS. Its always advised to have your audio ouput device(sound card) at 50% its potential and have your audio equipment at 50% as well. From there you should increase the audio equipment's volume up until you reach your desired output. SO if you can get 50% on your Altec Lansing you can adjust the rest via OS.
