Buying imac Air for daughter, but they have VERY limited storage. Why?

I have always purchased PCs and although I have a bunch of Apple products, I have never purchased or even looked into macs.

My daughter wants an imac air and after looking at them online, I noticed that most do not have much storage at all.

I am seeing most of them with 128 or 256 gb HDs. I realize it is SSD, but those will fill up so fast, I will need to be another storage device for her and she will not want to do that.

I bought a gaming desktop recently and it has a 2 TB HD. Yes, I realize there is more room in a desktop, but the mac is ridiculous.

Is it standard for macs to have so little storage? Do most people just buy an external storage device?

I know they are popular, so I guess people just learn to live with it?

They are data consumption devices, not data creation.

Everything lives online, and you just watch it. Browsing, youtube, netflix....everything lives elsewhere, and is owned by someone else.
If you do happen to 'create' something, let it live in the Apple Cloud.

My wife's PC has only a 250GB SSD. It can do that, only because it is connected to a home server box elsewhere in the house with multiTB space.
