My FX6300 is stuck to the heatsink and I need to reapply some thermal paste as the CPU is starting to overheat.

What should I do?
I do not have any rubbing alcohol.

Solution
You will need alcohol to clean off the old paste regardless. I would try to heat the cpu for awhile with a hair dryer an gently twist it loose. Good luck!
Hi

Was the thermal paste pre applied to your heatsink by the manufacturer?
Or did you apply it yourself

Many people apply too much so it acts as a barrier to heat transfer
And can spread beyond top surface of cpu

Should be sized as a few grains of rice , not pea sized

Be careful not to pull vertically as you can pull cpu out of socket which usually bends some pins.

Also check for other causes of over heating like blocked filters , case fans not running, cpu fan not running fast enough, heat sink fins covered in dust

Is CPU fan speed controlled by device driver or bios?
Over clocking with stock amd heatsink + fan ?

It should free up after slowly wiggling it free from CPU. It's likely "baked on" from use. I've pulled a few Pentium 4 CPUs out of the socket trying to remove heatsink. They still worked fine after reinstall with fresh compound. If they're stuck together after removing from motherboard, use a small flat screwdriver to carefully pry apart.
