HDD Caddy - working on old Asus, not on new Lenovo B50-80

Hello. So I bought Lenovo B50-80 + SSD. I replaced WD disk with SSD and put WD to HDD Caddy. It is not working though. It showed as "unknown device" and it took about 2 minutes more for computer to boot up with caddy connected. (I connected it instead of DVD rom). So I removed it and put into my old Asus N55SF, and it is working fine there. So I did a format, named the HDD and put it back to Lenovo. It was still under "other devices", but now with name: WDC WD10JPCX-24UE4T0. Still not working. It won't show in BIOS nor Windows install, but why is it working fine in Asus? They both have same systems, Win 8.1 64bit, only difference is that Lenovo is UEFI with SSD formatted to GPT, Asus is standard BIOS boot and MBR partitions. I tried some solutions, like uninstall Intel Rapid storage, but it was never installed, since I have my own Windows installation. What could be the problem?

Well as long as you're assured that the caddy is non-defective & you've correctly installed the device in your Lenovo laptop, I really don't know what practical options are open to you other than contacting Lenovo tech support to determine if they can be of any help. But the problem here is that laptop manufacturers are not supportive of these kinds of modifications of their products and invariably any warranty in effect will usually be voided as a consequence.
As it stands now your SSD is installed in the appropriate internal bay of the Lenovo laptop, right?

And the system boots & properly functions, right? No problems with the SSD, right?

When you boot-up with the WD HDD installed in the caddy's laptop's optical drive compartment the system doesn't detect that secondary HDD, right? That's your sole problem, right?

The HDD is now formatted, devoid of data, right? I suppose all the data that was on that HDD is now contained on the SSD - at least the data you wanted, right? Or perhaps you originally cloned the contents of the HDD to the SSD.

So what does Device Manager have to say about this situation? I take it the HDD is not listed in the "Disk drives", only under the "Other devices" section? And of course there's no listing of the HDD in Disk Management, right?

You've checked the caddy to ensure it's properly connected? I assume you don't have another HDD or SSD lying around that you could install in the caddy, huh? The major problem we've run into with these laptop optical drive caddies is that frequently the system will not permit a boot from an otherwise bootable HDD/SSD installed in the caddy. Generally no problem detecting a non-defective secondary HDD/SSD installed in the caddy.

Obviously there doesn't seem to be any problem with your HDD itself since you've tested it in another PC and it works OK there.

All correct. There wasn't anyting on the HDD, I bought laptop without operating system since I have my own. And yes, it is under "other devices" and after formatting it, there is also name of the HDD, but still no hardware ID or anything like that. It says right it is connected do Serial BUS 1 or something like that, it was the same info as in the Asus laptop, where HDD in caddy works fine.

I could take HDD from Asus laptop and try it in Lenovo, put it in caddy, I will do that in about few hours, I am not at home currently.

I will now try to put SSD into caddy and check if it shows in BIOS.

It certainly sounds like you're dealing with a defective caddy. It's something we've run into as well although I have to admit in nearly every situation I've run into involving the same type of problem you're experiencing the problem turned out to be an incorrect installation of the device by the user and not a defective caddy. But it can happen. I assume you've checked & double-checked to determine its installation/connection in the laptop is correct.

BTW, what's the make/model of the caddy?

Caddy is not defective since it's working fine in other laptop. It's generic caddy from ebay, for about 5 dollars. I tried SSD and HDD in other laptop in caddy and it works fine, but not in Lenovo laptop.

Hello, did you find the solution? I have exactly the same problem on a lenovo, same case, original hdd is on caddy and a new ssd is in internal bay, bios see my two disks (hdd in caddy and ssd in internal bay), windows only shows the ssd as a disk and hdd in caddy is listed in "other devices" only

Hi

This is my post from the lenovo forum. I hope it helps!

"I finally was able to get the caddy HDD working on the lenovo B50-80. Caddy is a no name, no brand generic one. Brand was listed as "OEM" :)

You can try these steps that made it work for me on Windows 10 64-bit 1067 with a 500 GB SSHD in the caddy:

WARNING - TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

- update BIOS to Version A8CN54WW(V3.07) the 27.10.2016 ( as malogajski mentioned ) - from the lenovo B50-80 drivers page

- INSTALL Intel Chipset Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Laptops - from the lenovo B50-80 drivers page file name 3hb001af.exe

- DO NOT INSTALL Intel Rapid Storage OR UNINSTALL it if you installed it previously

Link for the lenovo B50-80 win 10 drivers page:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Lenovo-B-Series-laptops/Lenovo-B50-80-Notebook?tabName=Downloads&linkTrack=Mast:SubNav:Support:Drivers%20and%20Software|Drivers%20and%20Software&beta=false

After these steps and necessasry reboots the HDD SHOULD be visible BUT I had to delete all partitions on the HDD IN THE CADDY and recreate them (LOSING ALL THE DATA) because they were not recognized correctly in Disk Management. You may have the same issue so BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DELETE/ERASE/FORMAT :)
Don't know why that happened but at least the HDD in the caddy worked afterwards. The primary drive (the SSD in the main drive bay with the OS) was OK and nothing was changed there.

Hopefully this will get your HDD caddy to work too, but again: PLEASE BE WARNED - TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!"
