Hey guys,

I am in the process of building my computer. Its an asus z97-AR with an i5 4690k, gpu is gtx 960. My problem is is that i am not good with computers and I want to POST test it but I can't quite find the 2 pins that you are supposed to short. Also, the power button I have, from the old powerspec case I'm using, doesn't have a 'reset' lead. Do i need that lead?

Thanks for reading,

Yes you could use the power button on your case. The power button on your case works the same way as a key or screw driver would by shorting the two pins do though. The switch also shorts the two pins in order to start the computer.

Anyway.. You don't need a hard drive to post, and you don't really need a GPU either but it would be nice to see something pop up on the screen to know it posted properly. You could also just plug the monitor into your onboard graphics by plugging the monitor into your motherboard I/O just for now. (HDMI port/VGA port/DVI port on the back of your motherboard).
So the two pins that you need to short will be at the bottom right of the motherboard. In your motherboard's manual, it will have the two pins labeled as Power + and - and on the motherboard it will probably be labeled PWR +/-. These two pins will be the same place you need to install the power button cord from your case.

Please feel free to ask any questions I can walk to through what to do if you get stuck on anything :D

Thanks so much, MaterDell! I can see a PLED + and - on it. The mobo is an asus Z97-ar 1150.

Okay so on the bank of pins at the lower right, on the bottom row of pins, the two that you need to short out are the set of two that are in the middle. (Theres a set of two on the right and a set of two on the left, short the set of two in between those sets.)

Ok, cool! thanks for looking that up! I am a bit concerned about shorting something, however, so could I use the power button on my case?

EDIT: Also, do I need my hard drive and/or my gpu to POST?
