Short version: Put 2 sticks of 2gb of RAM in my Dell Vostro 1540. BIOS and chipset are latest version, but it still only recognizes 3gb of it. Is the RAM mislabeled, or does the Core i3-370M only recognize a max of 3?

You say "BIOS only recognising".. you sure? or do you mean your PC is only showing 3GB?
if it PC.. you have 32bit windows? google it on why 32 bit windows does not show/allow you use full 4GB of RAM.
If it really BIOS.. you should be able to do some swapping of sticks to home in in what the problem is.. if you post more details of those tests.. we may be able to help more
Cheers

Well, I did some swapping. I somehow ended up with the sticks that shipped and the two mismatched sticks that were in the laptop to begin with. The two sticks I ordered only registered as 3gb, no matter what configuration. I swapped in one of the mismatched sticks with a stick that was clearly labeled as 2gb, and poof - 4gb. So, the upshot is that I ended up with 4gb being recognized, but one of them is clearly either mislabeled or defective. Thanks for the suggestion, as it ended up working out!
