I built my first pc like 3 months ago, and i do not have a GPU yet. I was looking through the market to see what GPU should i buy. My current build is a Intel Pentiume g3258 Motherboard gigabyte h81m-h Powersupply corsair CX600m Ram 8gb ddr3 1600mhz in a Corsair spec-01. I was wondering what should i upgrade, i have a 500$ budget and do not know what to upgrade.

Solution
The CPU and power supply are enough for you to run a GTX 960 or R9 380. If you don't have an SSD, I would definitely get one.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($77.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 380 2GB Video Card ($166.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $244.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You still have enough left to upgrade the CPU and motherboard, but then, it really wouldn't be and upgrade, more like a new build....

yeah i would disagree. for the price he can get a quad core (bare min on a gaming PC IMHO) where as he went to skylake the cost of a new Mobo would necessitate a dual core CPU though with 4 threads. a quad core would better serve him in the long run.,

i3 is helped by HT which is good, i5's are almost double the price of an i3 (regarding the same generation). Getting Skylake will get him up to date, including some cool features and perks not mentioning DDR4.

In this video, they compared a weaker i3 with a weaker i5 (you can use the ratio to apply to i3-4170 and i5-4690K and add some more performance to the i3 side because he is going for i3-6100 which is more powerful than the i3-4170): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Rih5sT5UtY

i3 has those 4 threads. The difference between an i3 and i5 is only noticable in a few games, and he has never told us which games he played so I simply got the BEST-FOR-THE-BUCK.

+ if he gets an i3, he will still end up with a GTX 970.

Also, SSDs are cool and all but they do not contribute to gaming performance so SSD is not necessarily needed although it is nice. HDD will do.

Also, that GTX 960 turbo you recommended is a hot burning noisy piece of metal.

Well a 960 is perfect i believe for the games i will be playing, but should i get a 2gb or a 4gb for the extra 50$. If i get a i5 4690k is the mobo good enough to not bottleneck the cpu and gpu? idk how bottleneck works tbh.

@oleg

Again I disgree. While no he didn't tell us what he plays...their are literally dozens of games out now that require a quad core (not a dual core with 4 threads...far cry 4, witcher 3, GTA V, Shadow of mordor to name a few) to run. yes there are some hacks to make it still work like dual core injector but more and more games are released requiring a quad core CPU. So i think he would be better served with a quad core that will work in his motherboard then buying a new motherboard, ram and a new CPU (for which is only a dual core) to replace his dual core CPU. seems rather backwards to me. The differance ddr4 ram makes compared to DDR3 frame rate wise is small. he'd get more bang for his buck with what i recommended

yeah its is plenty not to bottle neck you CPU or GPU and why i recommended it.

That motherboard MUST be replaced. It is a cheap, low quality boar. If you want an i5, then get either Asrock H97 4PRO (if you get i5-4460, i5-4590 or i5-4690 aka if you will not overclock), or MSI Z97 PC MATE (if you want to overclock and will go with i5-4690K).

GTX 960 has 128-bit bus and is not that powerful therefore it will not be able to use 4GB of VRAM. Buying 4GB version is almost a waste of money as slightly over 2GB is all it can utilize.

Because I knew you would have to be replacing your motherboard, I recommended you to go with Skylake right away. It is either getting a new Haswell CPU + mob or new Skylake CPU + mobo. I think new Skylake CPU+mobo would be better which is why i would get an i3-6100+GTX 970 but because you said GTX 960 is enough, I recommend going with i5-6500+GTX960.

I will be playing games like League of Legends, GTAV (GTAVI when it comes out), H1Z1, DayZ, CSGO, WOW, MMOs, MMORPGs, Rust, Fall Out 4, and games like that so i agree a i5 4690k is a good idea to pick up. But what else should i be getting. I only have 160gb of storage right now, and only one fan.

That is a very invalid objection. G3258 has problems running those games, not an i3.

Games do not recognize i3 as having 2 cores but recognize it as 4 cores making it seem like an i5 so those games run fine on an i3 whatsoever.

Upgrading from G3258 to an i3 is a bigger step than you think due to i3's HT. Even an overclocked G3258 could not match i3-4170 in gaming due to i3's HT and we are tallking about i3-6100 here which is SKylake and more powerful than i3-4170.

it's not an overclocker board...and yes i know i recommended a overclockable part but i did not mention overclocking. i was just using his budget to fufill his needs. The board is rated fairly well so i don't see how it must be replaced. it's typically score 4 out of 5 stars on most sites. Its not a beast of a board but its no slouch either.

It's a cheap H81 board that was poorly rated on Amazon and got 3/5 on Newegg.

It has to be replaced especially when talking about mid-high end stuff like i5 and 960.

If you are okay with its performance, then GTX 960 2GB is a nice card. GTX 970 is simply a monster at 1080p and maxes out everything it touches.

Once again, that H81M-H board is cheap and low quality, it was made for Celerons and Pentiums as well as i3's. You can put an i5 in an H81 chipset board but not in such a low quality one - I will simply tell you to change your mobo.

Because you are changing your motherboard, you could:
1) i5-4460/ i5-4590/ i5-4690 + Asrock H97 4PRO if you are not overclocking
2) i5-4690K + MSI Z97 PC MATE if you are not overclocking
3) i5-6500 (Skylake) + good LGA1151 board + DDR4
