Hardware or Software RAID?

Looking for some advice, I currently have 2 1TB WD Blue HDD's waiting to be installed into my server. I am going to do a fresh install of Ubuntu server 14.04. But my first question is should I use software RAID or hardware RAID?

If I use hardware RAID is this RAID card compatible with Ubuntu server and my Motherbaord. I have ASRock G31M-GS R2.0.

Appreciate any advice. :)

I am not a fan of RAID for a root volume. If it gets corrupted then both halves of the mirror get corrupted. I recommend doing volume copies to a cold copy and then if needed, just boot from the alternate volume. At least you can have a functioning boot volume that way.

The StarTech board is not actually hardware based raid. It is a board that uses software to make raid possible. Any hardware based raid will do all the calculations on board this one will only use the software to utilize the cpu to do the calculations for it. Look at an Adaptec, LSI, 3ware, hp, or one like that for hardware based raid. Wow I didn't realise that! So I may aswell use the Installation/SoftwareRAID on Ubuntu

Personally I never use raid for a boot drive. But i always set up an incremental backup so i never have to worry about it. But like kanewolf said make a volume copy to use or have the live system on a flash drive and you would be off and running quickly if anything happens. I do use raid 5 for my backup to insure i have no problems that i can't recover from though. Down side to that is you have to utilize numerous drives for Raid 5 and the speed isn't much different than a single drive. Here's what i do for a set up, I install the os on one drive and the data that i can't loose on the raid 5 system to insure it's safety. The os i can redo any time.
