My build:

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3P (rev. 1.0) AM3+/AM3 AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

GPU: SAPPHIRE Radeon R9 290 DirectX 11.2 100362SR 4GB 512-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5 GHz (4.1 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W FD6300WMHKBOX Desktop Processor

Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

PSU: EVGA 600B 100-B1-0600-KR 600W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply

This build has been working wonderfully for me for the past several weeks, with the GPU never exceeding 75-80c in any games. Last night, I was about to boot up Shadow of Mordor when I noticed my controller's lights weren't staying on, as though the device wasn't being recognized. In addition to this, my keyboard and mouse had stopped functioning. I rebooted the system to try to fix it, but upon restarting there was no display, and the hdd light on the case wasn't lighting up anymore. Since then, I've tried everything my feeble mind could think of, going through a full disassembly and reassembly, triple checking the internal connections, checking the voltage on the individual wires from the PSU, and replacing the TIM between the CPU and its heatsink. Still not working. I'm thinking I'll need to replace one of the components but I have no idea at all how to figure out which. Suggestions?

A great place to start is stripping to one DIMM taking out all expansion cards and seeing results. It's not a PSU failure if you've literally tested every pin. Ill do some research.

Thank you for the quick response. I tried what you suggested and removed the GPU and one of the RAM sticks. Unfortunately I have no way available to get my mobo directly connected to a monitor, but the hdd light was still not lighting up when I booted it this way.

I'm not sure if it's symptomatic of anything specific, but my optical drive is acting out as well. It erratically closes itself when ejected, at intervals ranging from ~0-10 seconds. When the SATA cable between the mobo and the optical drive is disconnected, the drive does not behave this way. This behavior persisted when booted in the way you suggested.

Also, all fans and their lights are still working, including the built in GPU fan before I removed the GPU.

Another thing I've tried that I hadn't mentioned was a CMOS reset by way of removing and replacing the mobo's battery. No changes from that either, positively or negatively.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have checked and double-checked that all nine standoffs are in the correct position and the mobo is not in contact with the case.

At the risk of sounding like a irritating call center tech try it , what have you got to loose ?

How far into the reboot process does it get?

Also (as you seem to suspect) simplifying (removing things) is always helpful in a bad situation. Without them your mobo OUGHT to boot (get power, power light on board is "on", the thing 'beeps' or whatever that board does at 'boot') even with no HDD, no optical drive, etc. If it isn't the actual mother board itself, you OUGHT to get some basic function without the other stuff plugged in.

Yep, this is making me start to think my mobo might be kaput, I'm not hearing any of the aforementioned beeps coming from it when I boot it up. The power light LED connected to the mobo from the case does light up however. I'm not entirely sure what to listen for since when the rig was up and running it was probably blocked out by the sounds of the fans and drives starting up, but listening carefully now and I can't hear anything. How can I differentiate between a problem with the CPU or mobo? At this point I'm assuming it's one or the other causing my issue but I'm not sure which to replace.

Were you using an anti-static wrist strap and or mat while working? There is a chance you shorted out your motherboard.
