Hello Tom'sHardware Community,

I've recently built a new system, specifications are below, and upon building it the power supply from my old computer, a EVGA 750 B2, makes a ticking noise under large amounts of loads, I RMAed the power supply and got the replacement yesterday. The one I received has dust build up on the fans, dings and dents on the metal, and the stickers are scratched as well as marks on them! The goal is just to send back what they gave me and sell my current power supply for like $50 or something and put it towards a new one.

I need a power supply that has a 0 db fan mode, is modular, and won't break the bank (at a $100 price point).

The power supplies I've thought of currently (Some are EVGA, I have multiple products of EVGA and won't let this single bad event make the relationship sour):

Corsair RM750i

EVGA SuperNova 750 P2

EVGA SuperNova 750 G2

FSP HG750

I'm pretty sure my system could run on 550W fine, here are the system specs for you guys:

CPU: i7-4790k
CPU Cooler: Be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
Mobo: AsRock H97M Pro4
Ram: 4 x 4 GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 2 x 240 Gb SSD
GPU: EVGA Gtx 970 Ref PCB w/ ACX 2.0
Case: Rosewill Legacy U3

Solution
Since your not going to SLI go for the 550w G2.

It's the best 550w PSU on the market based on the award winning Super Flower Leadex Gold series with a 7 year warranty.

550W G2 review.

Performance (40% of the final score) - you probably already know what I'm going to say here. Voltage regulation was excellent, averaging 0.9% in the hot box. No points deducted. Efficiency was a pass for Gold both times. No deduction. Ripple control was amazing, and probably the best I've ever seen, so definitely no deduction there. I saw no issues with anything else, so this...

I saw no issues with anything else, so this unit gets a 10 here.

Functionality (20% of the final score) - this unit gets everything right. Even the CPU cable, which I thought was terrible on the 650W, is done right here today. Semi fanless mode works well, the manual is decent, we got lots of connectors to power anything a 550W unit should power, and the box came with more goodies than I tend to expect with such a small unit. 10.

Value (20% of the final score) - you can get one of these for $84.99 at Newegg right now. That's a fair bit for a unit this size these days, but as always EVGA is right at the bottom of the cost pile when it comes to 80 Plus Gold and full modularity. The nearest competition is their own 550W GS unit at one dollar more money. This is nuts. How are you making any money on these, EVGA? 10.

Build Quality (20% of the final score) - oh, snap... EVGA just got another perfect total score. There's nothing wrong with this unit. Nothing. 10.

Is this thing quiet? I bought the EVGA SuperNova 650 Gold but returned it the same day cause its fan was louder then my lawnmower!

The unit is going to be mounted to the top of a case, making the fan suck in air from the parts.

As long as 550 watts will be enough for another SSD or two, with a little bit of overclocking too. I think I'll be good!

Would you still recommend the 550w if the 750w is the exact price on Amazon? EVGA 750 G2
