Howdy guys. First time OCer and toms poster here. I built the following rig 2 years ago (obviously some parts are new like the gpu)
I5 4670k with a hyper evo 212 push pull
As rock z87 pros
Evga 970 escobar
8gb ballistic 1600mhz

I recently decided to try and Oc, because what the heck. I've had it for 2 years and will upgrade in another year or two. So it looks like I was a loser in the Silicon lottery becausethe highest Oc I can get without getting too toasty for my liking is 4.2 ghz at 1.19 v core (cpu cache set to 38 because that's what the auto Oc tool put it at and so I kept that setting).

I seem to be fairly stable. Ran prime 95 for 4 hours, no issues and have been playing arkham knight with no crashes. Here is my concern. I get up to 84 C on my hottest core in prime 95 now and up to 65 c while playing Witcher 3 or arkham knight. These are nearly 10 C higher than when at stock.

Should I be worried about these temps?

Much appreciated.

Hi,

You should not be worried about those temps, they are perfectly fine. A CPU is still outputting the same heat no matter what cooler you have and 84 c is fine for something for prime 95 as it is an unreal test of how your PC will perform at MAX load and 65 is fine in the Witcher 3. And by the cooler that you have (Hyper 212 evo) they are nothing bad, and you will have to expect more heat when overclocking something like a Haswell compared to a Broadwell, Skylake or Haswell Refresh. These all havbe better temps than the original haswell as they have better silcone under the heatspreader.

I hope this has answered you question, just tell me if there is anything else that you would like to know an d I will be more than obliged to help in any way that I can!

Thanks,
Simon.

It depends on what the voltage settings are at, I mean at 1.19v on the core should be fine, but after around that 3.8Ghz mark, you will see some significant temperature rises due to the silicone, but for the Haswell I'd say that is perfectly normal and you shouldn't be worried about that.

I agree, the thermal compound can REALLY affect the temperatures of the CPU and you can pick it up for quite cheap from places like Newegg and NCIX (US/CA) or Scan and Overclockers (UK). You will need 70%+ rubbing alcohol to clean off the TIM, if you didn't already know that.

Do you mean without having any thermal paste at all?
If so that is a definite NO. The Thermal paste is what takes the heat from the CPU and exchanges it to the heatsink.

If you mean just leaving the CPU as it is then yes you will be fine, your components will last as long as they are have meant to, so you will be fine with what you have now, I would recommend just replacing it after half a year or so of intense use as it can highly decrease performance.
