So I'm trying to upgrade my friend's graphics card on his XPS 8000 motherboard computer (DP55M01). I upgraded the power supply (360W->EVGA 750 Supernova, 575 is nVidia recommended for card), and upgraded the BIOS from USB using Rufus/MSDOS etc. However, I'm having an issue similar to many other posts I see with people upgrading GPUs on old boards. When I boot with the new card, the BIOS screen hangs a little over halfway through the loading bar. I tried pulling the battery from the board and giving it 5 minutes and updating BIOS again, no dice. I'm 99% sure its not due to improper mounting of the card in the PCIe slot. When I pop the old card back in it boots fine, no issues.
What I'm thinking the issue is is the BIOS/motherboard itself and from what I read there maybe some sort of OEM lock disallowing it from recognizing/using my new GPU. The BIOS is from '09, last updated in '12, and is totally barebones, no UEFI options or any sort of legacy boot options or anything! Many threads I've read said to mess with UEFI or Legacy or Secure Boot settings, but I have none of these options with the crusty old BIOS I'm dealing with. I know the card is fine, I know the brand new power supply is good, and as long as the old card is in everything is peachy.
Did I miss something? Can I upgrade to a newer/better/different BIOS to fix this? Is there some setting I missed in my current BIOS? Do I need to change/update graphics drivers before installing the new card? Is the new card just not compatible with the motherboard? If it's some sort of OEM lock issue is there a way around it?
I can post screenshots or run CPU-Z and post screens or whatever could help solve this problem. I've had success learning the ins and outs of PC hardware on the fly over the years, but I've come up hard against this wall and I know you guys here know it all, so any help is greatly appreciated!
