Hi,

I want to build a system with a Intel Core i7-5960X and I need a lot of RAM.
The technical documentation says it does support up to 64GB of RAM but there are some articles on the internet that claim running i7 Haswell-E CPU's with 128GB RAM
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2938855/hardcore-hardware-we-stuffed-this-pc-with-128gb-of-cutting-edge-ddr4-ram.html
and there are few X99 motherboards that support 128GB.

Some people claim that Intel made the CPU spec when there where no 16GB modules available but now we have 16GB modules (non - ECC) and a i7-5960X should be able to run with 128GB if supported by the main board.

Please don't tell me that I don't need 128GB. I'm using professional applications that can use as much RAM as you can provide.
Also I know that the obvious solution is to use a Xeon system which officially supports huge amounts of RAM. If possible I want to avoid Xeon systems because they are more expensive.

Can anybody confirm that it's really possible to run a i7-5960X with 128GB ?

Reading the article, it's clear that only certain X99 motherboard OEMs will support 128GB of RAM, and even then, you still need a beta BIOS.

An i7 5960X and Xeon E5-2640 V3 are pretty much the same price, at least here in the UK; the Xeon is actually a little cheaper. The base clock is slower and it doesn't support DDR4 2133Mhz RAM, but the specs are much the same besides.

As you're building this yourself and the Xeon can use the same motherboard as the 5960X, the price will be much the same.

Your links are right, but the motherboard is 2011-3 (not 1151-3), and the ram is DD4 (not ddr3).

Thanks for the correction. I'm just so used to typing "1150" and "DDR3" I don't notice.

No worries, just correcting to avoid any confusion.
