I have a Toshiba 1TB portable hard drive 2.0-3.0. The hard drive is not showing up in My Computer or in Disk Management. It is not under the Unallocated area. It continues to show in the properties the code 10 error and the it will not start. I have a dell insipron 1545 that i am running it on. The hard drive is like two years old, but i could never get it to work.

Hi there duane15,

That is unpleasant. :(

The fact that the drive is not recognized by Disk Management, could indicated that the HDD inside is not recognized. Basically, this could be caused by faulty cable/enclosure/HDD.
So, you can start with using a different USB cable. You can even attach the drive to another system.
In case the issue persists, and the drive is not recognized by Disk Management, you have several options:
- Just RMA the drive in case it is under warranty. You can contact the manufacturer's Support on that.
- You could consider what Barty1884 suggested. Yet, you need to keep in mind that this will void the warranty if under any. Also, it may not work in case the drive has proprietary connectors as well as hardware...

Ok.....this gets difficult. Ultimately, if it's not showing in Disk Management, somethings definitely up.
I'm sure you realize now, if it didn't work at the time you got it, you should've returned it.

The simplest option would be to remove the drive from it's enclosure & connect via SATA cables to your motherboard.......as you're on a laptop, that is pretty much impossible.

So, options: Buy a new enclosure & house it in there or Remove it from the enclosure & attach it to another computer (a desktop) with a SATA/power cable.

- If you have crucial data stored on the drive, you will need to contact a data recovery company.

Unless I'm mistaken, Toshiba provide a 1 year limited warranty on those drives, so considering it's two years old, I doubt it's under warranty.

Doesn't sound like the drive ever worked.

My suggestions are based on the limited information provided. :)
With no model number, you can't really know if the warranty period is 1 year. It seems that there are some external drives with longer warranty periods(3 years) on the manufacturer's website.
