I have a friend who just told me his PC popped and started smoking. He indicated the water cooler leaked all over the MOBO and that it wont work now. He does not know exactly what does not work and I have not had time to go over there yet. Worst case is CPU, MOBO, and PSU will need to be replaced. He has SLI GTX 465's in the case and as long as they still work, he would want to keep those. What are the best choices for a CPU and MOBO for cheap. I don't want to bottle neck the GPU's but I also do not want to go overboard on price so close to christmas. I lean towards AMD but I have not even looked at the benefits and pitfalls for over a year. In short I am a functional noob in 2015 Intel vs AMD. I don't care about brand as its not my PC I just want him to be able to run Fallout 4 in 1080p on low settings with 30FPS+. My first thought was a FX-4350 and a Sabertooth but if you can get me more FPS with an intel build, or a APU build for the same price( is APU+SLI nvidia even possible?) I would be open to that too. What are my options fellas?

GTX 465's are not exactly powerful. You need to verify what is still good, like ram, and graphics cards, before you proceed much further.

Not sure why you would mix such an expensive motherboard with a low-end CPU. -This was directed at putting an FX4350 into a Sabretooth.

Yes you can install two Nvidia cards in any motherboard that supports SLI. Most FM2+ boards don't though, as they expect you to use the onboard APU video or use crossfire/hybrid crossfire.

SLI GTX465 will require about a nice 750W supply to leave a little wiggle room for the rest of the system.

What is the budget, currency, and geographical location is what you'll need to provide to get good advice.

General advice would be to get an I5-4460 and an Z97 motherboard. Should be about $250. Decent 650-750W supply should cost above $60 or so from a brand like XFX, Seasonic, Superflower, and a few others.

OH, I definatly understand that I need to get over there and have a look I am just going off of what he said he thinks the issue is. He isn't a build expert but he also isn't a complete novice. I plan on going over there with my PC and swaping parts till I get an exact idea on what is burned out. OnLy issue is I won't be able to do that with the MOBO or CPU as I don't usually go for Intel and that is why he is rocking. Finding out where the smoke came from might give me a hint in that department.

I am near a microcenter in Kansas and the budget is "as low as you can go" I picked the sabertooth cuz I have one and they are bullet proof, the FX-4350 is a cheap way to get him back to gaming/working. After the holidays I think he was planning on getting a better CPU so this was just a stop gap and that one looked OK to me. I had my eye on a specific Enermax unit for the PSU so the CPU/ MOBO is my main question as of this moment.

Ya that is a good point. I agree with it. I just had not given the the thought I give a build that I personally care for, so Sabertooth came to mind becuase I know they are reliable. He might replace but I don't think he is going to let go of those 465's till they break on him lol. The price of a i7 is silly when he is rocking GTX465's in SLI. Pentiums don't OC do they? He likes to Tinker with his stuff. If its an intel it would have to be unlocked. I don't know exaclty what he has now but I am pretty sure its a i5 and it is unlocked becuase he had it overclocked. So going from that to a G series might not be what he wants to do. I picked the FX chip becuase he said cheap and according to the benchmarks its value is high and you can OC it hell. I know I asked for opinions but I just don't see the point in buying a i7 for an extra 5 to 7 FPS over a FX chip that is under 150 bucks. I see a lot of people talking about that i3-4170 that the other guy mentioned, is that the go-to entry gaming chip for intel right now?

The G3258 is the only unlocked Pentium, but is only a dual core. (but it is really cheap). The FX-4350 while technically having 4 cores, is really two dual core modules. Each module shares resources. I would say FX-6300 if as a minimum if you were going that route. Keep in mind that Intel has released 3 or 4 generations and two process node reductions since the FX line came out.

That said if you go up a step to the 6th gen CPUs, they have unbound BCLK overclocking, but are still multiplier locked. They did manage 4.4Ghz out of an i5-6500 or i3-6100.

Then take advantage of their Intel bundle deals. I cannot recommend FX at this time. It is just simply too old, too hot, and too power hungry. The i3 bundled with a Z97 krait edition, would be enough for those GTX 465's, and they can drop a 4790k into it later. Stick with tier 1 and tier 2 units, on PSU. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

That sounds like a good idea my friend. I will go look at his PC today and then make a trip out to microcenter after that. I had looked at that Krait edition on newegg already. As for my PSU I always go for Enermax and yes I only do the best of the best.(I myself own a Lepa G900 for my current rig but every other time its a actual branded Enermax) The one I am looking at is actually a seasonic model underneath the badging, but All 3 of the sites I use to pick PSUs gave it the thumbs up on build quality and performance.

If budget is the only concern you can get an fx 6300 with a basic board for 90 bucks. I will say I worked on a system like this once and the board, gpu, and power supply were bad. If the graphics cards do work, use isopropyl alcohol to clean the circuit boards and dry before installing.

Graphics cards those 465s are rather old. Might be better off to grab a gtx 950. Maybe get him an evga 600b for the power supply. There are better ones but that one is decent and won't blow up his system. I run my system on one.

Well after going over there I figured out that only the PSU was not functioning and the smoke either came from that or the GPUs. I convinced him that the GPUs were total shit and that considering his other stuff was not broken, he should use that money to get a new GPU. It was a i7 870 BTW he had it plugged into the wrong fan jumper so it was giving a warning; that is why he thought the CPU was bad. He also bought tripple channel memory for his dual channel system and had them just pluged in to random slots. I had to take one stick out so he is running on low mem but memory is cheap and he had enough to get the system back up and running. I made the choice that the GPU was a better buy at this time(instead of 8gb of memory) and we went down to microcenter and got a Corsair 750 psu and a R9 380 Strix. It was only 209 bucks for a 4gb 380.... I got a little jelly. System works fine. Fallout 4 in ultra seettings... 30+ FPS. I cant tell exactly but there is no choppyness at all. Thanks for the help fellas and I think it worked out pretty well considering the path we were going to take left us with 2 shit GPU's.
