I purchased an old dell xps 630 for a friend for xmas and am looking to give it a bit of an upgrade before I hand it over.

I'd like him to be able to play Crowfall or Everquest Next Landmark or other games which use voxels on medium settings if possible.

The ram on the system is current 4x1gb DDR2 at 800mhz, i have the option to go with 2x2gb but I'm not sure if it will show any improvement.

The processor on hand is an intel Q9550 at 2.83 ghz

Video card is dual Geforce 9800GT 512mb cards set up with SLI

Currently running Windows 7 64bit

From what I can tell the MB won't take more than 4gb ram so there's not much of an upgrade there so I'm really looking at upgrading either the video card or the processor.

I found an INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME QX9650 which allows significant overclock for $125.00 plus shipping over at starmicro.

I also found an EVGA GeForce GTX 570 SC on Amazon for for $121.00 plus shipping.

I've got about another $100 and change to spend, where should I put the money?

It states that the max memory capacity is 8GB for that board. So either try to find a matching stick(s) to the one(s) you have now, or replace the current RAM with matching sticks of 800 or 667-MHz DDR2 Unbuffered SDRAM. Try to go with 8GB instead of just 4GB.

If you go with the GTX 570, you will need a high quality 550W or better PSU. If you still have money to burn, I'd suggest running the system as re-built for awhile and see if any 'surprises' pop up that you will have to spend that money on. I've been re-purposing old PCs for awhile and it never seems to fail, I will need something else to fix an unforeseen issue.

I was considering the QX9650 because with the DELL board, it is one of only two that allows overclocking just the CPU.

It's the stock board from DELL that came with that box.

Here are the specs from CNET: http://www.cnet.com/products/dell-xps-630/specs/

Here is what I was able to find for a MB part number: OC113J

There's details about the board itself here:
