Is my router the bottleneck in my transfer speeds?

I recently purchased a NAS (specifically, a Synology DiskStation 1815+) and over a wired connection it transfers at around 110MB/s which for my needs is plenty fine. However, over WiFi it transfers at around 6-7MB/s, which is quite slow.

I'm trying to find what the bottleneck is and, more importantly, if it can be fixed.

The device I was transferring to is a laptop which has 802.11ac, which I believe should be capable of higher speeds. I've attempted transferring to an SSD on the laptop so the drive speed of the laptop shouldn't be the issue.

The router I use is ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router details of which can be seen here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

I'm wondering if the router itself is a bottleneck, or perhaps even the router itself isn't an issue but I'm using improper settings?

An extra note, for testing the laptop was within 5 feet of the router with no obstructions.

So, is WiFi just unavoidably slower and there's no way to really improve my transfer speeds or can a new product or change of settings provide some improvements?

Thanks for any advice!

Wireless is absolutely slower, and there's not too much you can do about it. However, 6-7MBps is extremely slow, even for the slowest of wireless AC adapters. That sounds more like a slow Wireless N transfer rate, rather than AC.

That dual band router will broadcast 2 separate wireless networks, one will be on the 2.4Ghz band and the other on the 5Ghz band. Wireless AC is 5Ghz only, so your 2.4Ghz network will top out at wireless N. Is it possible when you connected to your router you connected to the 2.4Ghz network rather than the 5Ghz one? That would limit you to Wireless N which could max out at your current transfer rates.

Try connecting your laptop to the other Wireless Network. You should see 20MBps or above, even from...

Ah wow, you're certainly right! I just connected to the 5GHZ network and the transfer speed is around 29MBps which is much better, I appreciate the help!

29MBps is still way slower than cable, of course, but that's where AC should be and faster than before at least. Glad it worked. Nice to have a simple fix for a change!
