I've never built a computer before, but wanted to try it and i would be using it for gaming, mostly light-medium. I really don't want to spend more than $500ish, if at all possible. After scouring reviews, i compiled this set up. 1) would it explode? 2) would it last fairly long? 3) anything i need to know in terms of maintaining the system? 4) any other advice?

Your build is reasonable, and, yes, it will not explode.

The main concern I would have is that there are no good upgrades available if you want a cpu upgrade in the future.

For future upgrade options, I like the newest tech.
Build using a lga1151 motherboard and a i3-6100.
That lets you upgrade to I5, I7, and future kaby lake processors.

FWIW.
I will never again build without a ssd for the "C" drive. It makes everything you do much quicker.
120gb is minimum, it will hold the os and a handful of games. If you can go 240gb, you may never need a hard drive.

I would defer on the hard drive unless you need to store large files such as video's.
It is easy to add a hard drive later.
Samsung EVO is a good choice.
Intel 730 is OK...

Intel 730 is OK too.

You could build based on a lga1150 motherboard and use a G3258.
Here is what it can do compared to a X4-860K:

But I think slylake is more "future resistant"
