WD Passport Ultra 2TB not working properly

I have a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB. It is less than a year old and half full of files. It has been working fine until yesterday when I was transferring a file as usual to it and it stopped in the middle of it and ejected itself. When I re-connected it, it seemed to be responsive but was reading very slow and causing my macbook to do the colour wheel while it was loading the files. The files seem to be intact and I tried using another usb cable and other external hard drives but they were fine. I tried it on another macbook and windows computer and it had the same issue. It seems to be recognised by all the computers fine, and my files seem to all be there, but when I click on a folder, it takes up to a minute for them to open and when I try to open a file it takes another minute to open and doesn’t open correctly and causes the computer to freeze while it is loading. Is there any thing I can do to fix it or at least get the 950GB worth of data off of it?

Welcome to the community, neegan!

I'm really sorry to hear about your connectivity issues with the WD My Passport external drive! :( I'd suggest you to try plugging the external with a different USB cable and see if that will help the drive perform better on your systems. The one you are currently using could be faulty, thus causing you performance decrease and lagging. I'd also strongly recommend you to try and backup as much of the data as you can!
While on the Mac, you could try running Disk Utility and see if the 'Repair disk' command will help as well. Here's a tutorial from our knowledge base that can help you test the WD Passport for defects: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=M7S2ZD
If you are on a Windows computer, you can use WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows as well to test the drive's health and SMART status by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the utility: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=7UVdSN

Keep me posted with the results. Hope these help.

As stated, I tried two different USB cables and the issue was still the same. I will have to buy another hard drive to be able to back it up which is a real hassle...
I tried running disk utility but the drive either disconnects itself from the finder or an error message appears saying it couldn't continue with the repair process because it wouldn't unmount.
I ran a WD test on my macbook and it passed one but failed another

This seems very unfortunate, @neegan! :( If the external drive performs the same way with different cables on different systems, then it's very possible that it's failing and the diagnostic tests might as well be confirming this.
I'd strongly recommend you to consider contacting a professional data recovery service for assistance with your files. You can check our data recovery partners worldwide here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Ifz3sM

The WD My Passport drive should still be covered by the warranty, but just to be sure you can check the status here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CNtRF9
If it's still under warranty, you definitely need to get in touch with our customer support and let them know about your issues with the external HDD. You should be able to send an RMA and get a replacement from us soon enough. However, keep in mind that data recovery is a priority in your case and you need to do that before the RMA procedure.

This is extremely frustrating to hear as I literally just got back a different WD external hard drive from data recovery a week ago after it being there for 5 months...
