Why can't I extend the volume in disk management?

Solution
I think you men 4 TB of hard drive space (Memory = RAM)

Maximum size for MBR formatted partitions is 2.1TB anything after need to be partition into GPT when it's a boot drive. You can convert but since the OS is on it, you will have to delete the volume and start again.

1.Your board must support UEFI
2. The OS has to be 64bit Win7 SP1 or newer
3. Boot with UEFI Boot not standard Boot, to do this launch the boot device list and it should say something like
DVD and UEFI DVD
4. Delete the partition and create a new one, Windows will create additional partitions along with it. This makes it to GPT. Or do a USB...

5. Install Windows.

Thanks so much, will work on it in the morning and let you know if it works.

^ you zan actually use gpart to format a MBR drive past 2 tb. As suggested though 'gpt' should be used really.

You have a physical 500gb c drive too ??

Did you perchance install windows with both drives plugged in ??

If so the system partition files may be on the 4tb drive.

When building /installing a new system always do the windows install with only a single primary hard drive physically installed in the PC.

I have two hard drives, one being a 500GB ssd and another being a 4tb hdd/sdd hybrid. I installed windows on the 500GB SSD. I dont have any system filed on the 4tb drive because I've formatted it multiple times. Sorry for the late response.

Please note that you will able to convert your MBR disk to GPT only if your PC (motherboard to precise) supports UEFI (see how to check if your PC supports UEFI).

Even though it’s always a wise idea to create GPT disk when you install a new hard drive, it’s also possible to convert your existing hard drive to GPT. Although there are plenty of tools available for the job, the native Disk Management tool in recent versions of Windows is capable of converting a MBR disk to GPT.

The problem with Disk Management tool is that it deletes all your current partitions and volumes before converting a MBR disk to GPT disk, which also means that you will lose your data on stored on the drive. In other words, go for Disk Management tool if you have backed up your data and don’t mind losing the data on your hard drive.

Two methods here that don't involve data loss using 3rd party tools

How to Convert MBR to GPT Disk in Windows 10 / 8 / 7

The GUID Partition Table (GPT) was introduced as a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). GPT provides more options than the traditional MBR partitioning method that is common in PCs. If you have a large-sized Hard Drive, then you could want to convert MBR to GPT. This is because, MBR disks support only four partition table entries. If one wants more partitions, then one needs to create a secondary structure known as an extended partition.

So for any hard drive over 2TB, we need to use GPT partition. If you have a disk larger than 2TB size, the rest of the disk space will not be used unless you convert it to GPT

3. Convert MBR to GPT without losing data using Partition Assistant

The last method is using a tool called AOMEI Partition Assistant Lite Edition. It’s a free multifunction partition management software. This tool’s feature can help you convert a disk with data into GPT or MBR style without data loss.
