So i have an overclocked i5 4690k at 4.7, but I have been offered an i7 3820 for free. I know that the 3820 will do wel lover 4.6 ghz, and some will do 5. Is it an upgrade to the 3820? Primary use is gaming, although some rendering is done.

I really dont know to be honest, it will depend greatly on the game in question. If you can indeed get that high of an overclock on the 3820 I would imagine it would do very well in gaming vs the i5 but l it will depend greatly on the game, in single threaded or poorly multi threaded games I would expect the i5 to perform better when at the same clock speed as the i7 but in games with good multi threaded support...

Thanks. Will there be a big margin in games? Assuming that I will be running the i7 at 4.5ghz, what will the difference be like? If it is not noticeable, I would take the i7.

As a platform I would rather have Z97 than X79, z97 has more modern features I dont even believe x79 had USB 3.0 support.

I got the i7 3820. It has usb 3.0, and I already have a stable 4.5 ghz, which is with VERY low temperatures. I think that I will be able to get 4.8 - 5 out of it. Suprisingly good upgrade. Since I kinda dived for the CPU without being sure, ill pick you as best answer since you really helped. Thanks.
