I just finished putting together a Skylake computer with:
-Asus z170i Pro Graming
-i5-6600
-Samsung 950 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD
-2x HSGT Deskstar 4TB HDD

The Asus z170i Pro Gaming motherboard is not detecting Samsung 950 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD in BIOS or in the Windows 10 install. I created the USB Windows 10 install with the ISO from the Microsoft site and Bootcamp on Mac OS X 10.11. I used the BIOS Exit menu-> "Launch EFI Shell from USB devices" option to load the Windows install from the USB drive. Is this the correct way to load the UEFI install?

In the BIOS under Advanced -> PCH Storage Configuration -> M.2 reads "none". I updated to BIOS version to 705.

In the BIOS under Boot I tried:
CSM - [Enabled]
Boot Device Control - [UEFO and Legacy OPROM] and [UEFI only]
Boot from Storage - [UEFI driver first]
Boot from PCI-E/PCI - [UEFI driver first]

In the BIOS under Advanced there are no options for M.2, only PCI-E power management settings. On the Asus Z170 ATX version others have said that there is a option to set PCI-E to M.2, but the mini-ITX version doesn't have this setting in the latest BIOS.

I also tried installing Windows 10 with the DVD-ROM and BIOS set to defaults. Still M.2 not showing. I also tried downloading the Samsung drivers and putting them on another USB drive but they are not detected in the Load Drivers in the Windows 10 install.

Thanks for any help.

My next steps would be to disconnect all SATA devices, if that doesn't work, then take the computer apart and reseat the M.2 drive.

Solution
I made it work with my Asus Z170I PRO GAMING

To be honest, I'm not completely sure what step really made the trick, I have a couple hunches Here are the steps that I made, maybe you can figure out what is the real solution:

- Disabled CSM (** See Note1)
- Upgraded the BIOS to 0806 - Only listed when you select Others in the OS (** See Note2)
- Unplugged my CMOS battery and waited for 5 minutes (** See Note2)
- Installed Samsung 950 PRO
- Booted Windows from my original SSD (OCZ Agility 60G) ;
- Installed Samsung NVMe Drivers
- Using the Samsung Migration tool; I cloned my OCZ into 950 PRO
- Rebooted the computer and entered to the BIOS; now the boot menu showed the possible boot options , the first two "Windows Secure boot" made...

doesn't work. i removed all sata drives. only the m2 ssd is in its place. the system boots anyways but all ubuntu efi boot menue entries are lost.
only windows bootloader is visible and useable.

i managed to boot ubuntu again with the help of gummiboot. the bad news is that after some houres the board refused to enter setup with my asus gtx 750 installed.

after removing the gfx card i could complete setup (Press F1 to...) and was able to use the PC again.

i tried the last two bios/uefi versions but i couldn't see any difference.

i think i have to return the board.

- Rebooted the computer and entered to the BIOS; now the boot menu showed the possible boot options , the first two "Windows Secure boot" made my system boot from the 950 PRO, the third option (also called Windows Secure boot) booted from my OCZ drive. (** See Note3)
- Shut down my computer and unplugged my OCZ SSD;
- Turned my computer and entered to the BIOS and confirmed that "Windows Secure boot" options were available (now showing 2 since the OCZ was gone)
- Plugged my USB Windows 10 install and proceed with the Windows (re)installation
- Before the Windows 10 install restarted the computer, I unplugged my USB key
- Entered into the BIOS and confirmed that now only one
- Power off my computer and connected my OCZ drive
- Entered into the BIOS and confirmed that two "Windows Secure boot" were listed, - Selected 950 PRO as the first boot option
- And finally, I was able to start the process of installing the drivers.

Note 1:

When I had CSM enabled, my Samsung 950 pro appeared as boot option, but every time that I selected to boot from it, the computer rebooted and get me back to the BIOS, as if the BIOS failed to boot.

Now in order to make my "Samsung 950 pro " appear as boot option there was a little trick that I needed to do. If I disabled and then re-enabled CSM, my Samsung 950 PRO completely disappear as boot option. The only way that I could get back on the list was by powering on my computer with Windows 10 install USB Key connected at least one time (maybe with USB connected, the BIOS did a complete check for every device connected into the Motherboard?)

Note 2:

I don't believe that the BIOS and battery removal played a role on the solution since the documentation does not indicate any changes to M.2 or boot options. I ended up upgrading the firmware because it was the only option to troubleshoot when I was talking with Asus tech team.

Note 3:

I believe that the reason that I saw two Windows Boot option is because the Samsung migration tool recreated the boot partition but at the same time left the original (copied from the OCZ drive) intact

My hunch,

I believe that the trick was done by the cloning of my original drive. The cloning process copied the Secure Boot partition in my 950 PRO this allowed Windows 10 install realize that 950 was able to support this type of boot format instead of falling back on the legacy (that it does not seems to work with Asus.) I could be totally wrong here.

I am in the same boat. Rather than starting a new thread, I am posting here to see if I get any response. The 950 Pro NVMe 256GB M.2 drive is not showing up in UEFI bios. I did manage to install windows 10 by disabling CSM and following the instructions in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No-ct8pQcIg

And Windows Boot Manager appears as a boot option. And I could boot to Win 10, install all the drivers. The read and write speeds to the drive in 10 is as expected as per disk benchmark software.

However the Drive does not show up in the M.2 slot in Bios. Intermittently Windows fails to load and the PC goes in to Bios due to boot failure. I am going to disassemble the PC and try and re-sit the drive. Unfortunately my case does not have a window/ opening under motherboard. So will have to take down everything :(

My question to fellow Asus Z170i Pro Gaming users:

1) Does your NVMe drive in M.2 slot show up in Bios?
2) How can I determine if my motherboard or the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe drive is faulty? I don't have access to other similar hardware to swap out and check.

Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, I know this is a few months old now, but did you ever find out the answers to your 2 questions?

My Samsung SM951 M.2 NVME drive does not show in the bios either, although system seems to run ok and at advertised speeds.

Thanks

Well this is a worry, I am looking to build a new PC, with an Asus Z170 Pro Gaming (whats the different between the Z170 and Z170i)? and a Samsung 850 EVO Series MZ-N5E500BW 500GB M.2 type drive, are you running Win 10 off the M.2 and your computer works, despite the BIOS not being able to detect the M.2?

Oh I just found out what a Z170i is

Hi there, just to clarify the comment about the bios not detecting the Samsung SM951.....from day 1 (which was a complete new build for me) the bios has ALWAYS detected the SM951 as an available storage device, its just that it doesn't show up as being connected to the M.2 slot....my bios screen shot below shows any connected Sata or M.2 devices and as you can see they all show as N/A......however this computer has been built with ONLY 1 storage device which is the 512GB Samsung SM951 M.2 NVME version, which if you didn't know is a NON retail version of the SSD, which is where I think the issue of not appearing in peoples bios comes from.

I did have an issue initially installing windows 10 onto the SM951 but that was easily fixed (my other posts explain that) and now windows 10 has been installed without any problems at all and looking at the same screen shot you will see on the right hand side the boot priority section and it shows the ONLY storage device I installed in the computer and lists it as "windows boot manager"

I think from your comment that as you intend to buy a proper RETAIL version of a M.2 SSD the issue of not showing as a connected device will be a mute issue and should have no issues what so ever.

I have a gear with spec ;
- Mobo Asus Z170i
- Ram Corsair Red DDR4 16GB (8x2)
- SSD Fujitsu F200 480GB
- OS Win10 64 bit
the PC is running well
then I bought the new SSD, Samsung SSD 950 Pro M.2 512GB

Before installing Samsung 950 PRO,
- be sure to upgrade your motherboard drivers with latest version by downloading at https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170I-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/
- choose your correct OS
- install the newest/latest drivers
- restart PC

Next Step,
preparation for SSD 950 software
- download Samsung Data Migration Software at --> http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/downloads/software/Samsung_Data_Migration_Setup_v30.zip

- Turn off PC then install your 950 PRO M.2 at the back of Mobo (OMG... it's need longer time more than i think)
- Restart , and BIOS was detect my new V-Nand SSD 950 PRO M.2 (only detect not as drive yet)

In my case i want to change my 1st boot drive to 950 PRO then,
- install Samsung Data Migration Software
- clone my old SSD Fujitsu F200 to 950 PRO its about 30 minutes depend on your system
after
- restart PC

Now 950 PRO is ready to be a new drive
The I setup BIOS to 1st Priority BOOT Drive to 950 PRO
I have no problem found at all with 950 PRO M.2 ( the only problem is little bit longer to install 950 at bottom/back of Z170i PRO Gaming Mobo)
Hope this help

regards,
hadi
