Excuse my naivety, but what is the difference between on-board graphics embedded into a motherboard and Intel HD Graphics 4600?
If I have a motherboard which features on-board graphics and a CPU with
Intel HD Graphics 4600, which one will be my default displayer?

Solution
Pretty much nobody does motherboard based integrated graphics anymore. You might find some old low end AM3+ boards for the AMD FX Processors that will have an integrated GPU on the motherboard, but that's it. These days, integrated graphics are now based on the CPU. Intel HD Graphics 4600 will be your only option on a certain Haswell CPUs unless you have a dedicated graphics card.
