So I recently got my I7 4790k and MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 LGA 1150 in the mail.

To my great surprise as I am building my new computer I find out that the CPU WON'T FIT IN THE SOCKET?!

I will add pictures and exact model numbers later but the problem is, when I try to place my cpu on the socket the top of the cpu you fit and I can't place it on the indents.

This is very weird please help quick

Solution
Contact the seller. that looks like the bottom of an LGA 775 cpu or something.

If they will not get it sorted, take it to amazon for sure.

Look like someone placed a label over an old LGA 775 cpu and sold it as a new chip.

Just to be sure, you took the plastic piece out which they ship the motherboard with to protect the pins, right? Just checking.

Beyond that, make sure the orientation of the cpu in the socket is correct. Make sure the arrow is pointing to the right corner. AND BE CAREFUL. You don't want to bend the pins.

Just added pictures, This is my fourth build so I know I should be careful with the pins etc etc.

The orientation of the cpu indicators looks off, maybe its the cpu not the mobo

The last pictures clearly shows what the problem is

I think you're trying to put the CPU in the wrong way. It's out by 90 degrees if I've read your manual correctly.

Unless I'm mistaken, you need to rotate the CPU 90 degrees anti-clockwise. If you look at the socket with the bracket at the "top", the corner with the painted triangle (pin1) should be on the bottom left... i.e., at the opposite end to the bracket.

@rhysiam

Yes I noticed that aswell, the cpu triangle is on the top not the bottom left when I place it on my MB, the thing is, If I do how you suggested (align the triangles) the two indentations on the sides of the cpu won't line up with the indentations on the motherboard. (see last picture for more details)

Well you've certainly been sold a faulty CPU. Good idea from nukemaster for a underside shot. Perhaps the notches were just mistakenly cut on the wrong side.. feel like taking a drill to you CPU? (Don't do this... even though it might actually work)

I kid, of course, your best bet for sure is to contact the seller and report it as faulty.

Uploaded some underside picture.

Wait so your saying I have a skylake cpu Oo maybe if it is a 6700k I shouldn't report it as being faulty ;)
But yeah the notches are definitely off, I was contemplating like and idiot taking some sandpaper to the edges hoping it would plop in.

I might have been from a seller using amazon, I will have to check up on that

If you zoom in and look closely at the third image (the one taken directly above the chip), you can see the original CPU silk screen underneath the "i7 4790K" label that's been stuck on top. I can't make out all the writing, but I can see the CPU was made in Costa Rica, and not Vietnam, like the label claims. The CPU is definitely a lot older than an i7 4790K.

Unfortunately I have to concur with those above, it's not an i7 4790K. It's a relabeled CPU someone is trying to pass off as an i7 4790K.

Thank you for all your help @rhysiam @nukemaster

It looks like I am going to have to ship the cpu back as it's not a 4790k at all...

Thank you for helping me resolve this quickly guys, I just wish I could have it all built before christmas, guess not :/

I did some Google-Images searches too, but nukemaster beat me to it. LGA 775 CPU. Nice catch on the printed writing too... that's a poor knock off!

Unlucky.

Did you actually buy the actual Amazon item you linked above? Because that seems to be Amazon themselves, not a 3rd party seller through Amazon.

@rhysiam I am pretty sure I purchased it from amazon directly, as I live in Vancouver BC I needed it to be able to ship to canada. And it looks like amazon will ship it to Canada, But I might have chosen a different seller, How can I check to see whom I purchased it from?

EDIT: I went under my order's and Looks like It was Sold by: Amazon Export Sales LLC

It is ok Amazon Exports is just amazon in the USA. Contact them and they should get you all set.

I have had very good service from Amazon in the past.

EDIT
Just a heads up. Since you are in BC, I recommend also checking out NCIX and its affiliates. The exchange rate from USD to CAD is pretty bad at this time.
