-BEFORE YOU READ THIS THREAD-

do not recommend me to build a brand new PC, i already have a custom built PC and a new lenovo flex 3 laptop.

i have a 2005 emachines c6207 PC, im having it dual-booted with windows XP and windows 8.1, because i want to keep the originality of the computer, but i want it to be up-to-date. the specs are good enough, an athlon 64 and 2 GB of RAM for windows 8.1 32 bit, but the system is laggy and slow because of the GPU, an ati radeon xpress 200. what would be the best GPU thats fully compatible with windows XP and windows 8.1?

seems the gtx 960 is still supported under xp . its big brothers are not --

amd's newer cards don't support anything under 7

I never recommend this upgrade [or any not listed under the manufactured approved list ] for a prebuilt

my disclaimer

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

I would find out 100% if or what aftermarket card can or will work and not just because its got a pci-e slot

good luck

actually, many emachines PC's allow upgrades, the case is designed to be easy to open and the front manufacturer spec-sheet says that theres an available PCI-express slot

the bios isnt locked either

yup, just like I said above well good luck with that - would not of posted all that if it was so easy as you say and others find out glad you know its all good - just like the rest that buy cards tol find there not supported in the end

poor thing never had a bios update [locked / proprietary] so do you expect it to support newer cards ?? [lucky if any that did not ship with it from the factory .damn lucky ]
