EVGA SuperNova G2 750 - High pitch noise when off, but not when on?

Hello TomsHardware Community,

I've purchased a 750 G2, an upgrade from the B2 lineup, and runs my system perfectly. However when off, in both eco and normal mode, it emits a high pitch whistle noise that is noticeable within a 5 foot range. When on, it is actually quieter then it is off. I don't really mind that its loud when it's off, but is this a issue with the unit that could mean its dying?

I've own numerous amounts of power supplies and none have had this issue. The noise is as loud as my UPC APC unit.

Solution
thanks ChrisB, for coming through on this. I think he's better safe then sorry - I hope he don't fell put out , but we all get a lemon once in a wile and that's with any brand or part - its not like the G2 units are of low quality seems just the 1 in 10,000 bad luck this time ..

good luck ,and hope it all works out in the end

Just unplugged everything, so its only the power supply connected to power, and it sounds normal, just a light buzz that I've heard before. However, plugging in cables makes it whine more and more.

UPDATE: It seems to be when I only plug in the motherboard connector, the testing one too!

cant say, but something just don't seem right ?? don't know if I would risk it popping/burn up and then take out the board or vid card or what ever else it was powering at the time if not all ?? -your call

I think better safe then sorry and rma - doing what you say just aint normal behavior ..

may have a bad rectifier or transformer ?? may under/over volt parts ??

I mean you got say 1000 dollars of parts hooked to a 120$ psu that maybe putting all that at risk ??? no thanks and rma

[all opinion]
what did the evga rep have to say ?? that's who you should deal with on this .

I went to my Microcenter and exchanged the G2 for a Corsair AX760, this is my 3rd EVGA power supply in this year alone so I think I'll be done with their power supplies unfortunately; but they still make great graphic cards and customer support. Now the AX760's fan stays at 100% with "Hybrid mode" enabled, I guess I'll be cursed with broken power supplies.

Well the EVGA power supply had a self tester, so it would not have to be plugged into the computer, and it made that noise too. It had been connected to my battery backup only, which has been tested on many computers before and worked fine in the past.

I guess it comes down to how the Corsair AX760 behaves ?? if it works as expected then I guess theres something up with evga's units and how you got them set up ?

you should discuses in detail that with there support to turn over to there R&D to test to see if something needs to be looked at sent in with the unit rma ??

Still at square one with Microcenter as I got this as a response from Corsair:
"Created By: Arturo TS (12/24/2015 7:47 PM)
Sorry to hear that, please initiate an exchange with microcenter, as that is not normal operation."

The EVGA units weren't connected to the computer at first boot for them, again using the self tester, and the Corsair was the only unit connected first with the motherboard. What could be that something else causing the issue? I may just take my entire computer to Microcenter when I have off next week.

UPDATE: If I do happen to bring it to Microcenter I may get that G2 again, It was $65 after rebate and the cables + quality felt better then the Corsair. I just want a unit with no issues.

that's a mity low price ?? looking here microcenter is not listed anymore since oct. ??? and a lot less then newegg with rebate

I don't know what to think of a store that makes like a online retailer like newegg and offers super low prices on things but its all ways ''in store only'' ?? cant deliver whats up with that deal ?? the deals look so good I could afford to pay the shipping myself but still a no-no with them [ lol] something's up..

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr

makes me wonder how they and they only can under sell all the rest as they do ?? maybe they operate at a loss or ramen noodles breakfast/lunch and dinner profit margins ?

The high pitched whine is from the PSU's +5Vsb's VRM circuit. The +5Vsb circuit is always on when the PSU's AC power switch is turned on and the PSU is receiving AC power. When you turn the PSU's AC power switch off or unplug the PSU then the whine will stop. It does not mean that the PSU is dying. It has more to do with component and manufacturing quality.

I'm ready to go to Microcenter tomorrow with my entire computer to show them that it doesen't work, and test it there after I buy it. It is still a quiet computer, no doubt, but I feel like if the power supply originally cost $250 it should do exactly what it says on the box, otherwise, I feel like I am being robbed. The EVGA G2, I feel, has had all the features I wanted and had cables I liked for a price half of the Corsair, but I just want to get one that works.

found this kinda interesting ??

''EVGA occassionally makes products for Best Buy that are diffrient from their other products, despite even being the same model. I know they did this with a GTX 970 model, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again. ''

http://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=2412444&fp=1

so is this going on with there psu's as well and why microcenter can under price all the rest ?? Hmmmmmm..........

The power supply original is $100 after rebate, but they were able to price match with Amazon (@ $89) and still gave me a rebate. It would not surprise me if they did this though.

Went to MicroCenter with my entire computer, bought another 750 G2 from EVGA and tested it at the store with my entire rig (Although they were pretty restricted and wouldn't allow me to use a mouse they had because "they didn't have the resources to test my computer", whatever that means.). Now I'm home with a brand new EVGA 750 G2 and a dead silent computer for a price of $65 after rebate. Turns out I got some bad lemons.

hate you had to jump through all them hoops - those g2 units had high marks and known for there quality ? when you get all them in a row makes me wonder .. seemed they had a recall and the newer units from evga are now a seasonic platform I think the g2 was superflower.
makes you wonder if they may of been having issues with the superflower folks at the end or why the cost got so low ?

anyway glad it worked out in the end

good luck
