The GTX 980 Ti, particularly a nice custom model with a factory overclock, is the fastest card on the market at any resolution.

All FuryX cards are reference models with no overclocking headroom. They also have a noticable pump noise that can be annoying. Compared to something like a MSI Lightning, Asus Strix, or Gigabyte G1 it's no contest.

Well if we are talking specifically the 980 ti vs the fury x I would go for the 980 ti personally. It seems to perform better than the fury x in the majority of titles, better AMD drivers may fix that in the future however. HBM in the fury x is new technology and I personally think its best to wait until at least the 2nd generation of HBM cards before dropping 500 dollars on one. Just my opinion.

Depends on how high resolution you are using.

4k or greater(3x 1440p), go with Fury X. Amd performs better @ high resolution gaming.
1440p or 1080p, go with 980 ti. Nvidia performs better the lower resolution you go.

While you might not want to start a fight between fans, you probably will. This is a very sensitive topic.

That said, I was in your shoes not too long ago. I looked at the Fury X and the 980Ti (Specifically the Asus Strix). Similar performance but the 980Ti does have more VRAM, that is a plus to me. But the Fury X has higher memory bandwidth. When I made my decision it was mainly due to the fact that the Fury X was in short supply and I found the Asus 980Ti Strix for $649.

This is a stock Fury X vs a Stock 980Ti. Both can be overclocked but the Fury X has a lower limit due to the uArch while most 980Tis are pushing 1300MHz stock and can be, with decent cooling, pushed to 1400MHz for the core. Asa you can see they are very similar with the 980Ti wining more than the Fury X but not by a large amount, only in some games.

If you are buying a GPU now I would suggest a 980Ti over a Fury X.

If your at 1080p 60hz and dont plan to upgrade your monitor soon you dont need a 980 ti or fury x kind of overkill, I would get a 970 or a 390 that will max most games at 1080p 60fps just like a 980 ti would.

In the next three years however a 970 and 390 will start to slow down due to newer tech being used. A 980Ti would last longer for 1080p.

Not that I do not agree with you for the short term and overall but f you want to max games out even at 1080p a 980Ti still has some games that will drop below 60FPS maxed out.

I agree, OP if you have enough disposable income I would get the 980 ti as well. But if your already stretching your budget to get the 980 ti, a 970 or my preference in that price range the 390 are also very good choices for the time being and I highly doubt you would be dissapointed with either. But like jimmysmitty said the 980 ti is probably best for future games.
