i recently bought a 500 gig samsung 850 evo ssd just for my steam account. i only have 8 games downloaded onto it.
i just downloaded Squad. Steam said the game was a 3.5 gig DL. before i started the DL, my ssd said i had 42.8 gig remaining. after the DL finished, it said i have 34.1 gig remaining. that means that a 3.5 gig DL on my ssd actually took 8.7 gig.

Is a gig of data on an SSD different than on a HDD ?
or is there something wrong?
why is 8 games taking up so much of my SSD space.

downloaded games are;
ARK
Arma 3
CS-GO
H1Z1
Miscreated
Rust
Squad
Witcher 2

correction; Squad is actually a 12 gig DL. which confuses me even more now.
according to Steam info on the games i have downloaded for recommended space, all 8 games only come out to 148 gig of space.
i am so confused.
Help please. but use kid gloves. i am hardware smart, software stupid. thank you.

There is no difference between size measurements on HDDs and SSDs.
Games are compressed for downloading, but when they are installed they take up more space. The download size should always be smaller than the installed size. This keeps downloads fast. You can recover some of this lost space by enabling compression on your drive, though that could lower performance in some situations.
If you have any DLC or mods installed for your games, those can all take a lot of extra space.
