Hey guys, so got a new Mobo and an SSD and what i wanted to do is put windows 10 onto my SSD and run it off of there instead of my C drive which is where it is now. Is there a way where i can just install windows 10 onto my SSD and run it off of there and remove windows 10 from my C Drive and have it run off my SSD? i have a lot of stuff on my C drive and i dont want to reformat it cause i dont want to lose that stuff. Basically just move W10 from HDD to SSD or install it onto my SSD and run it off of there. can anyone help?

I have windows 10 because of a free upgrade from 7-10

So would i need to instal windows 7 onto my SSD and then do windows updates and then upgrade to windows 10 when i can? if so how do i get windows 10 off my C drive without wiping out everything?

Well that is pretty close. Both the 8 and 9 series Intel chipsets use the ICH10 SATA controller so you might be able to just install the new board then clone the PC.

USAFRet is correct. If it is a OEM copy then it gets tied to the original motherboard and might not be able to be moved to a new board.

1. You can't move 'just the OS'
2. Since you are installing a clean OS, you'll have to install all your applications again anyway. Steam games can probably be moved as needed. Applications, no.
3. As above, you may need to buy a whole new OS. You're basically building a whole new PC.

well the free upgrade is still around so if you can find a copy of windows 7 or 8 for a cheaper price then a copy of windows 10 just get the cheaper version of windows and perform the windows 10 upgrade

From valid locations, there is maybe a $10 difference. Unless some valid retailer has it on sale.
And you won't have to worry about the whole Upgrade process.
