X99 motherboard => slow USB 3.0 data transfer speed?

I just upgraded my computer to an X99 platform and I transferred a large (15 GB) folder from my SSD hard drive to a USB 3.0 memory stick. I watched the data transfer speeds and they averaged 5MB/s, which seems pitifully slow to me. The 15 GB folder contained hundreds of small files so I know this will slow the transfer rate down as compared to transferring one large data file, but still - it took the better part of 50 minutes to complete the transfer which seems unacceptable for a brand spankin' new computer.

The memory stick is definitely USB 3.0 (1 year old w/ blue coloured dongle) and it was plugged into the front of the case, which has two USB 3.0 ports (the back of the case has a few USB 3.1 ports but I wasn't plugged into those).

Also, my wireless mouse is plugged into the 2nd USB 3.0 port at the front of the computer and while the data transfer was occurring, the mouse became all but unusable. The data transfer seemed to be saturating the bus, the result of which was that when I would move the mouse it would jitter and lag horribly on the monitor - as I say, unusable.

Details:
-ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA2011-3 DDR4 mobo
-5820K (not overclocked)
-16GB DDR4 RAM
-SSD hard drive
-Zotac Geforce GTX 970 video card
-Corsair Carbide series SPEC-02 ATX gaming case

Does this seem normal to everybody? I find it incredibly hard to believe that USB 3.0 data transfer speeds should be so pitifully slow AND cripple my wireless mouse.

Thanks!

Check your BIOS. I recall that mine (2010 old style BIOS but still) had a setting for the speed of the USB ports and connectors (for front panel USB and such).
