Setting up a remote access workstation for multiple users

Hi everyone,

I'm an engineer into computation and I'm setting up a new workstation for the small consulting company where I work. Most people work from home, so I need to figure out a remote login situation for people to run large Matlab jobs and also access the reference management software Mendeley.

Both will run on linux which I used exclusively during grad school including lots of ssh to on campus workstations. However everyone else in the company runs windows, so if there's going to be any redundant responsibility then I'm tempted to go with a windows OS. That said, windows server is expensive.

Do I need a windows server OS or can I just run Win7 and set up remote access?

For personal remote access I have used Team Viewer but I'm really not sure if that's a good situation.

If anyone could get me pointed in the right direction I'd appreciate it, my google game isn't really coming through for me like I thought it would.

The simplest solution for you is to setup TeamViewer on the PC running Matlab/Mendeley/etc, set up a strong password, and share it with home users. Remind them that this is single-user solution - although many users can connect to that PC, all of them will see and control it.

If you need multi-user Matlab, you have to talk to Matlab sales about setting up multi-user envoronment. You will probably need to set up Windows Terminal Server (and this will going to cost, hardware and Windows only, couple of thousand dollars).

I suggest that you just set up a pilot Windows 7 system for remote access but keep it as simple as possible with only you and maybe a couple of other trusted individuals to help test.

First get remote access up and running so you can be sure that that part is viable.

Then add in Matlab or Mendeley to continue the testing and remote access functionality.

Then add in the other application.

Using a stepped, pilot approach will help you solve any problems and start identifying any performance problems once they become apparent.

Take and keep notes. Change things one at at time. Find performance factors you can easily monitor.

Does not cost anything and once you get to the point where it does not work then you will have a baseline from which the costs of necessary hardware can be projected. E.g., not enough memory, add in the cost of the necessary memory.
