Upgrading i7 2600 motherboard compatability

I am considering upgrading my i7 2600. My memory is 16mb and I have an Nvidia 960 with 4mb. I want my PC to handle some of the new generation games. I would like highre i7 cpu, but do not want to change the motherboard. Could anyone advise on the cpu I should go for.

what motherboard do you have? you can overclock 4 bins over the turbo boost if you have the right motherboard. otherwise there are no real gains to be had in gaming since since your processor is still pretty powerful even by todays standards. a few games can see up to a 10fps difference if you were able to overclock to 4.5ghz or if you upgraded to a brand new 6700k for $500. but you would see far greater gains by spending $500 on a flagship gpu.
