I just got a 4K TV so i hooked up a HDMI cable straight from the HDMI port on the GPU to the TV but got no signal, do i need some kind of adaptor to get it to work? or is it a software issue?

The GPU i have is a Asus GTX 770.

According to this guy, HDMI cables should work at 4k:

However, be aware that HDMI is a really complicated technology due to the requirement for DCP. This means that driver failures are more common and problems with HDMI are much more difficult to debug compared to DVI. I don't know how DisplayPort compares to HDMI in terms of complexity, but if it can output 4k at 60hz as Unregistered1 says then you might want to give it a try. You might also try connecting to a monitor that does HDMI for debugging. What you might learn I can't really say, as DCP can kick in and screw up the signal for any reason whatsoever. The Wikipedia article on DisplayPort says that DCP is an optional feature of the technology rather than a required feature. For that reason I would expect fewer DCP screw ups with it. Copy protection has turned modern televisions into debugging nightmares - and this applies even without connecting an HTPC. It's why I'm glad that I currently use a monitor to do all my Netflix watching. Good luck with this.
