Looking for motherboard advice. I think I fried my motherboard. I tried to install more ram and a new graphics card today. When I turned it on no beeps and no video. We had a storm and I think there may have been some residual static. I don't know other than it does not work now.

Motherboard was a p8p67 pro rev 3.1 which has long since been discontinued.
Ram G.skill ripjaws 2x4gb (was trying to add another 2x4)
cpu i5 2500k
video card 560ti (old) evga gtx 970 sc (upgrade)

Solution
Windows 10 generates it's serial based on your motherboard and hardware. the new system will deactivate your Windows 10 install but it can be reactivated through Microsoft. the system will still run but with 30 day trial limitations. you will have that long at least to backup anything important and/or figure out what to do about reactivating.

also if you still have a Windows 7 or 8 install disk you can reinstall one of them and upgrade to 10 again.

if your claim covers the entire system, maybe add Windows 10 installation media to the list of items needed.

I did that. I tried with old video card and without the new RAM. I thought (after calling evga to tell them I had no video) that I needed to update BIOS before the new card would work. I tried my old card and still nothing. That was when I noticed no beeping. Just fans whirring. I tried leaving it unplugged for a few hours, just because. I have a red LED light and Green LED light. I am not sure what they are, they were always there always come on when system is operational. There was a storm here yesterday and the power was out for an hour. I have it hooked up to a UPS, btw.

I can find a p8p67 pro on ebay of all places. I just have no way of knowing what components if it was or just was the MB. I have no friends with computers, and little money so geek squad is way too high.

check your manual for what the LED indicators mean exactly. you stated "no beeps" when powering on. did your system normally beep when powering up?

make sure you have your 8pin CPU and other GPU power cables attached correctly.

reset BIOS.

also, with the 560ti; try each RAM stick one at a time in DIMM slot 1 separately. if still not working then repeat in DIMM slot 2.
if nothing changes this should eliminate RAM & memory DIMM slots as the culprit.

if deciding to replace the motherboard i would recommend upgrading to something more modern. at least, get a Z77/87 or something like this that may support your existing CPU. really though, you should probably look into moving up to Z170 chipset.

I am looking into just upgrading. I won't know until at least Monday, but I am going to see if I can turn this in on homeowner's insurance. I think, all I will need is MB, CPU and RAM. possibly power supply. I have a silverstone raven rv03 case. 2 hdd's and 3 external hdd's. (I am a data hoarder). Win10 pro x64. graphics card is either the 970 if it wasn't damaged or the 560ti and try to RMA the 970 if it was damaged. If I do get the money, then I will upgrade to skylake. Would you recommend the "k" processor (not planning on oc). I didn't oc the 2500k (I thought I would, but never needed it.) No SSD, but was planning on that in a few months. I got the gpu instead.

Is it still possible to just transfer my HD with my OS (win10) to a new motherboard / cpu and run it (with a few tweaks of course) without too many issues? Like I said earlier, not sure if insurance would cover it, but if it does.

Is this enough? I already have case, hdds and gpu. IF the insurance covers enough and I were able to change cases, what would you suggest? I have a silverstone raven rv03. It is just getting too big and heavy to work in. I love the airflow and filters. The filters can be a pain sometimes due to the magnets not being very strong. I like the case, I just wish it were smaller. I have a gtx 970 sc and 2 internal hdd's. several externals. I also have a corsair h60 cpu cooler. I was thinking of reusing it. It is almost 5 years old though. I have had this computer for 5 years. I am coming from an i5-2500k and p8p67 pro motherboard. I would love to have an m2 with that motherboard, but that may have to wait. Also, will that psu work with the raven? I should go ahead and replace the psu due to a power surge dontcha think?

looks good. it would be a good idea to get a newer PSU to handle the new hardware anyway. Tom's has a great section about trustworthy PSUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

personally i would go for the 6600K CPU. i would also look for RAM with a lower CAS than 15. maybe some DDR4 2400 CAS 12. but what you have chosen would already be a huge upgrade from the current system.

there's tons of threads here at Tom's already about good Z170 setups and deals if you do some searching.

I agree. I would go for the k version if it weren't so Much more than the 6500. Z170 boards are priced well. I have a Silverstone strider 750w PSU right now. Fully modular. I'll look around some more to make sure. And I have to talk insurance ppl too.

Insurance did not cover the cost. Deductible was too high. I ordered my parts today. I should get them in a couple of days or so. I went with an i5 6500, asus H170 pro gaming and 8gb g.skill ripjaws V ddr4 2133 ram. What started as a minor upgrade turned into a major overhaul. It was another 365 on top of the cost of the 970.

will do. Right now, my parts are still sitting in UPS hub in city just an hour away. I didn't know UPS did not deliver on New Years Eve. I won't get them until Monday the 4th. Very unhappy.

I got it all put together again. I'm not getting the benchmarks I had hoped for yet. I am thinking of doing a windows refresh. I have a problem with this. I have a usb drive (Samsung Story Station 2tb) that keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. The drive on the other port doesn't do this. They are on the front panel usb 3 ports. The other drive is a WD Elements 2TB. I have tried turning off xhci turning off legacy and other fixes. They did not work. It still turns off every 20min or so and reconnects. I also tried changing the value in the power saving plan to 9999. I did not see the option to disable it completely. I made sure the BIOS were up to date. I tried swapping ports and it still happens.

it sounds like you are saying you have a bad port that keeps disconnecting that this samsung drive is plugged into. if that is the case; remove the WD then put the samsung in the functioning port.
or do you mean that no matter which port; the samsung has disconnect issues?

if the port is not the issue you can buy a $10 8GB USB drive from an office supply store/wal-mart/best-buy/big lots/etc to finish the refresh task.

I did try swapping ports that it was plugged into. It still did it. The refresh may or may not solve it. I just want to refresh because I noticed all of the junk that I had installed over the months and years and I am sure that it is slowing it down. I have way too many games installed. Start fresh since I have a new computer in essence. BTW, all I had to do was contact MS about re-authenticating windows 10. Told them what happened and they said to just use my key from 8.1. No need to buy a new license.

The story station is where I keep most of my media. Trying to watch a movie and it cuts out every 20 minutes and I have to restart the movie is annoying. The drive worked perfectly before. I know there were other people complaining about this same issue. That's where I got the power saving, xhci, legacy etc... solutions. This just started after installing new motherboard. The reason I think a refresh may help is maybe conflicting drivers, although I did not see anything wrong in the device manager. I am going to refresh in the next day or two. Mainly to start fresh and see if I can improve performance, another reason is that I have a hunch that there may be conflicts somewhere that are not showing up. For now, I just have move the movie, one at a time, to a different drive.

i've had issues like this with Window's power scheme in other versions of Windows. there's a good chance the OS refresh will fix this issue. if not, it may be a problem with the motherboard.
have you installed the motherboard utilities? they usually come with system control software that may offer some settings in regards to the USB power problems.

60fps in Inquisition is pretty good. don't remember the ingame options exactly but there's a good chance you could turn down AA or shadows and turn the textures and other settings up to ultra with the same fps.

I moved the Story Station to an empty usb 3.1 port and it hasn't given me any problems. I did the windows refresh. I'm still trying to get my settings back to a way that I like.

On a side note, I was using RainMeter for rss feeds and other system monitoring. I want something else, though. Is there anything else out there? I liked the way desktopx looked, but not sure if it is compatible with win10.
