Will upgrading to Windows 7 uninstall all my programs?

I dropped off my PCs at a repair shop because I needed them fixed ASAP but didn't have time between work/holidays to sit around and test one thing after another to diagnose the problem.

On one PC they said Windows was corrupt and suggested upgrading it from Vista -> 7. I said fine. I got it back and noticed -all- my programs are gone. Almost all, if not all, should have been compatible with Windows 7. My browser and all my bookmarks too (last bookmark backup was in June... so at least I have that... but I was surprised that the browser is totally gone but the backup files are still there). Is this how it's supposed to be? Should I call the repair shop and ask what they can do? The supposedly did a full backup before upgrading.

I wouldn't complain too much, it's just that many program discs I left at my other house. In Asia. I'm in the US now so it's going to be months before I can retrieve them :heink:..

All depends on exactly what they did, and why.

"On one PC they said Windows was corrupt"...this probably warrants a whole wipe and reinstall.

If you let someone else do it, without strict written confirmation of exactly what they will do...all bets are off.
Even then, it may get screwed up. Once done, too late.

This is specifically what backups are for.

Do you have the serial key for that Adobe? If so, you can download the install directly from Adobe.

Thanks for the quick reply. There wasn't anything important on the computer that I didn't already have a backup of, but just in case, I did pay them to make a back up too. So, it won't be possible to restore my programs from that?

I guess it's my fault for assuming they'd at least tell me about the program thing... -_-. You know, even an, "oh by the way...". But I am still curious to know if this is what's supposed to happen with a Vista -> Win7 upgrade. I have another computer I'm thinking of doing myself eventually but I hadn't heard of this issue with Vista ->7. Only 7->10.

And I just found my serial on another PC where I installed CS with the same license so hopefully that will work. I'm just worried because I didn't deactivate the install on the other PC before the program disappeared. I can't remember but I think I only get 2-3 installs with my license :T so it may not work at all....

With a potentially corrupt Vista install, "upgrading" to Win 7 was probably not a good idea.
Wipe everything and reinstall.

No, you can't resurrect your programs from whatever backup they may have made. Those need to be installed with the new OS.

*If* you have the serial number for that CS5, and if it is not recognized...you may have to call Adobe and explain the situation.

No, If you go from 7-10 everything will be there!

At least for me with CC, I can have it on multiple machines I just have to log out every time. Not sure how it works with cs5.

As USAFRet mentioned, there is a good chance you may have to call adobe and explain.

You will also have to reinstall all programs as they cannot be reserected from the backup as he explained as well.

:( Why did I trust them...

Well, I can't confirm it against the physical serial sticker on my Adobe box as it's overseas... but the system info on the install of Adobe that I'm running on this PC lists a serial number so I'm going to assume that's the one! Guess it's time to make a call to Adobe....

That's really the main one I was worried about since it's the most expensive of all my software ><.

Thanks again for your help :wahoo:

Ooh, maybe I misunderstood the problems about upgrading to Windows 10. Well, that's good to know! :D Thank you!

That is not an absolute certainty.
This depends completely on what the 'repair shop' did. It is entirely possible that a whole new install would be needed.

Licensing for CC is completely different than standalone CS5.

For future reference, run Belarc Advisor. This will find and document just about every serial number or license in the PC.
Print out and save. Maybe even folded and taped to the inside of the PC.

There are numerous potential issues with upgrades I agree, but if it is a clean Windows 7 install to 10, I doubt he will loose anything, but as these things go, you should backup no matter what.

Thanks for clearing that up, I've have only ever owned CC so I wouldn't know.

A clean Upgrade is significantly different than a wipe and clean install.
No matter what the original OS is...if it is sufficiently borked up...a full wipe and reinstall may be needed.
In which case, all of your stuff is long gone.

Yes, thus backup,backup,backup.
