Loss of HDMI signal after game crashes (Gigabyte R9 380 G1 Gaming 4GB)

My computer has worked fine since I built it back in August but since the beginning of November I have been getting crashing issues where the game freezes, the screen goes black and then pops up with a screen saying "No HDMI signal". This happens for Fallout 4 and Assassin's Creed Syndicate but not during normal use such as browsing the web or watching Netflix etc. (specs. at bottom)

I have re-installed the drivers for my graphics card and played with various quality settings ingame but nothing prevents this issue. I have also checked the physical connections to my graphics card, both the power connector and the connection to the motherboard itself, and both appear to be properly placed.

After loosing HDMI signal I have tried changing to a different HDMI port on the back of my computer but nothing pops up so I have no choice but to manually restart my computer. There has been a couple of occasions where I crashed to the desktop and it recovers saying my graphics drivers crashed and recovered.

I have found no possible solution to this problem so any help is appreciated!!

Specs:

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU: i5 4690 3.5GHz
RAM: 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaw 1600MHz
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Anniversary
Graphics: Gigabyte R9 380 G1 Gaming 4GB
Graphics Driver: AMD Crimson 15.30.1025.1001

If you need any more info let me know!!

thanks

First I would start by downgrading your graphics driver, also know that the Crimson drivers have been having issues with games a lot recently. Fallout 4 being one of them. Best start fully uninstall all amd/ati graphics drivers and then restart system, once it boots reset the resolution and before installing any drivers test run a game and see if it has the hdmi issue again

I can only downgrade my drivers to an earlier version of crimson, there is no catalyst drivers for windows 10 that I have seen. As for uninstalling all drivers, restarting and testing I have a problem with the driver reinstalling itself upon restart so I have been unable to test it without. Is there any particular reason the drivers reinstall themselves? Maybe just the system detecting and installing by itself or something of the sort.

Assuming its reinstalling by windows auto update so disable that then do a full uninstall off the drivers again. Even delete any downloaded driver versions you have on your HD(s), then try testing my idea again

Alright I believe I managed to uninstall the drivers and test the issue. The game crashed to a no HDMI signal again. I would assume then that this means my actual graphics card is faulty and not the drivers, though there were some reports about the crimson drivers damaging some cards so that could be connected.

Isaac, were you able to fix this issue via RMA? I have similar issues with both of these games. Just want to know if I have a faulty card. Btw reddit shows a lot of people with similar issues:

The RMA is taking 4 weeks since the place I got it from doesn't check it itself but rather sends it back to the manufacturer. I sent it in on the 27th Dec so another week until I expect any response.

There is a post in the reddit thread you found that suggests the overdrive profile is causing the problem and they turned it down from 1000MHz to 995MHz so you might try that.

Thx for your prompt feedback. The same PC with 6970x2 was rock solid, even overclocked it worked like a charm. Now with this card I only stumble upon issues. I'm really dissapointed, rather had taken Nvidia after all.

Did several tests: ram, cpu, switched PSU's etc. I'll try the suggestion with underclocking, maybe this works.

I'm really curious if your RMA pulls the trick. Please keep me posted! Thanks and good luck.

I just went out to the shop for RMA. This shop is NOT sending directly to AMD service center, but instead tries to reproduce the error and swap in case defective.

This will take up to two weeks max.

I just got my graphics card back from RMA, well to be accurate they gave me a new graphics card since the old one was faulty (they didn't tell me how exactly). However, I am still getting the No HDMI signal crash which means either this card is also faulty or the is some other problem. It could be the crimson drivers still but supposedly those were fixed by now and you can't get anything before crimson for windows 10 as is anyway. I also have tried multiple versions of the drivers both rolled back and what not as I said before but also now I have got the issue despite the drivers being updated. I am going to try wiping and reinstalling my graphics drivers just to make sure nothing was left over from previously and then if that doesnt work then I might try the underclocking supposed solution.

EDIT: It seems that the issue may be resolved just AC Syndicate is having its own crashing problems. I will test over the next couple of days and see how it runs.

Got feedback from the shop today:
* This graphics card causes system instability, random black screen, random visual artifacts

Also they couldn't determine exactly what is causing the problems. I'll go for an upgrade and try the R9 390 8GB.. Fingers crossed, I hope this one is stable.

I'll do some testing and let you guys know

I have been testing for a while now, shortly after my last message I started getting the issue (minus the HDMI signal problem) and have been in contact with AMD trying to solve the problem. We have tried the following unsuccessfully:

- RMA graphics card (R9 380) => got replaced fixing HDMI issue but not the driver crashing issue
- Updating to the latest drivers
- Clean install of drivers
- Using previous driver version
- Using an old driver version
- Re-installing windows
- Using the beta of an old driver => worked for about 11 days

At this point I am literally out of ideas, maybe I will contact gigabyte too and see if they can offer any advice.

Sorry if this is too late, but if you can get to the gigabyte website. You can download the bios utility for graphics card. It is pretty easy, and won't let you install a bios not right for your card. Helps create a back-up first too. I had all the same problems you were describing, and it's all fixed, runs great now.

It might be worth looking at. My problems have been occurring less frequently right now; I had one crash to no HDMI signal a couple of days ago which hasn't happened since replacing the GPU and the first crash in a couple of weeks. I will take a look and see if this bios thing can help.

If anyone is having this problem still I found a fix for it. I got my r9 380 about 2 months ago and I kept getting crash to no signal until I found this fix. Everything has been working perfect for a week now. So I thought I would share this for others in need. https://youtu.be/VIJw1-bijAw I hope it helps!

I was having random frequent crashes under general use/gaming. I looked on reddit's forums addressing the same symptoms, and followed the solution amd offered, albeit a 'temporary solution'. Probably because the system continues to crash/vid signal loss, only hard reset, but does so at a less frequent rate. Anyway, their temporary solution, was as you well demonstrate inri, only I used DDU to clean uninstall all amd drivers from my system then install catalyst beta 15.11.1. drivers, I was told to custom install and to turn evolve gaming off. I turned off win10 updates which is useful because you don't want driver updates and the service station updating to Crimson, as I and many others have experienced are part of the problem. I turned steam overlay off and I underclocked the card. Be aware though that although you may think they have no way in to update the drivers, unfortunately amd will send pop ups for updates which you should cancel, or on hindsight use DDU and the install of 15.11.1. at that point again, you might start experiencing gfx drivers failing and the inevitable crashes that follow. Anyway it's been about 3 or 4 weeks since I did all this, and I experienced my gfx drivers fail the other day, right after a driver update request from amd, and low and behold, I'd cancelled the request, but they found a way in. I saw an outline of a pop-up earlier either yesterday or today, I only paid minute attention to it, but I had the feeling it was an update from amd. Well guess what? Crashed the first time today in 3 or 4 weeks. So I've done as what was suggested and followed to the 'temporary solution' protocol, but those sly old dogs at amd eh?
I don't believe there'll be a complete fix for this, as when you put the hardware in you also have to install their software, but we can come as damn near close to a solution, which is a complete shame, because it's a nice gfx card.
