Happy Holidays TH community! I recently upgraded to an i7 4790k and love it. I have an h80i cooler installed and I know it isn't the best but I was just wondering if these temps are fine. I have it at 4ghz and the idle temp was floating around 38-42c. I used intel extreme tuning utility (never using prime95) and it said it was at 4.2ghz boosted and fluctuated between 67-72c. I was just wondering if these temps are safe or normal for this cooler. I know the cooling I could have gotten if I went with an h100i it is just my case isn't the best. The minute I stopped stressing it dropped like a rock to between 37c-44c. Thanks!

Edit: Just played a simple source game and it reached a high of 74c. Should I remount?

Solution
Your temps are fine. When background processes run, the CPU gets warmer and that's normal. As long as it's cool enough at full load, then you don't have to worry about it.

Should I remount and try again? Is 74c a normal high for a h80i while playing a simple game?

To start with, what is the ambient temperature? Remount it if you did it wrong the first time like applying too much thermal paste. Testing a cooling solution while gaming isn't ideal because CPU utilization tends to fluctuate; it would be easier to determine if it's working properly or not if you ran the latest version of Prime95. If it doesn't reach 100°C within a couple minutes, then it's working properly. You'll probably be told that it's dangerous, but it will throttle and probably shutdown when the pump fails.

Alright good news and bad news. Good news is that I ran prime95 for a good 5 mins and it rarely went a degree over 75c. Bad news is after I stopped stressing it dropped like a rock to 39-40c. As I sat there and watched it for a few it would sometimes jump from 36c-55c. It is all over the place sometimes and I am on the balanced feature not quiet . This is also after I remounted everything. I noticed I had a little too much thermal paste on but I removed it and put a lot less so hopefully it isn't too much of an issue now.

Thanks for the help! I will still monitor the temps and if it gets too out of control then I will see what I can do. Not to mention XMP is enabled so it sometimes gets to 4.4ghz :p

Update: alright I just remounted at least 3 times just to narrow down the issue. Still got the same pattern of temps. Checked the backplate and everything. I reset everything in bios to default and only turned on XMP, updated my bios, and drivers. Idk if this has anything to do with it but I remember when I installed my cpu the first bootup there was a message saying "change in cpu found would u like to run setup or reset default settings" I tried to click the run cpu setup option but my pc wasn't connecting to my keyboard so I restarted my pc in hopes of it coming back but instead of the option coming up it kinda just booted to windows.

Ok I looked in my bios and temps were almost stable at 49c and now and then jumps to 52c but not for long at all. Just rendered in sony vegas as well and noticed it jumped to 75c until it was done and then back down to 55c.

Even though idle temps aren't something to worry about it just bugs me for some reason how my cpu fluctuates from 40-50c on only 8-10% cpu load on something as simple as browsing the internet. It just seems like the slightest alteration in usage makes it go nuts.

Not 100% sure, I am on the balanced preset.
