I bought two little quad core xeon processors (much tinier than I expected) but I cannot figure out where the port is!!! I understand they are made for server motherboards, but can someone show me where/how they plug into a motherboard via picture or highly detailed description?

Ok I see how I may have implied that I have a server motherboad, so let me clarify, I do NOT have a server motherboard lol.
this is the one I am using.http://www.cnet.com/products/gateway-gm5684e-pentium-e2180-2-ghz-1-gb-160-gb/specs/

I would like a picture to see how the processor WOULD plug in if I DID have a server motherboard.

my friend said that the the processors are LGA771, I am assuming that is the port type but correct me if I am wrong, I am better with software than hardware.

You'd need to mod them to fit a socket 775; but a modded BIOS to support a Xeon processor doesn't seem to exist for that motherboard. Even if it did, you could install only one CPU, not two. You can't do anything with them unless you buy a compatible server motherboard, a new larger case and new memory. Best is to sell them.

Probably, but what Xeon processors did you buy? Once you know you can easily check if they are supported by that motherboard. Don't forget that you'll need a case that supports SSI TEB format motherboards and expensive FBDIMM memory modules. Once done, you'll have a system that's significantly slower than a new entry level build that costs about the same.

Your friend probably didn't check compatibility before making that recommendation. The E5472 is not on the list of supported processors. The S5400SF seems to be the only compatible server motherboard: http://ark.intel.com/products/29871/Intel-Server-Board-S5400SF#@compatibility

What's the purpose of the system? That wouldn't be a good gaming system, but it could run VMs is enough RAM is installed.

If you decide to go ahead with the Xeon processors, then buy a motherboard, a case that includes a compatible power supply, CPU coolers and 16GB of memory (it's so old that it now is cheap): http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.XS5400SF.TRS0&_nkw=S5400SF&_sacat=0 Unless you're familiar with servers, you probably don't know what you're getting into. Hopefully your friend is hardware savvy and he could help you build that probably not very good nor that useful server.

well see I want to play skyrim on my windows computer (cause it's inconvenient on my mac) and my video card was not supported by skyrim so I decided I might as well get a bunch of new hardware with the video card for a low price. I was not informed that xeons were for servers beforehand

Older socket 775 Xeon processors were for servers only. It would have been best if you had asked before instead of after, but it's too late. You should try to sell them if possible and build a new system (or buy a used one) that better meets your requirements. Unfortunately your current system can't easily be upgraded to meet the recommended requirements.

I'll see if one of my friends will trade me something for em.
