Currently have a CPU: AMD FX6350, GPU: Radeon HD6970, ram: 16gb Corsair DDR3 1600 that are probably working OK. However, my generic 550w power supply, case, mobo, and 8-year old hard drive definitely need replacing. My main uses are graphic design, streaming video, gaming, and video editing.

Lately there's mechanical whining from the HD and it takes forever to access/install/remove files, and there's also a persistent sound/video stuttering problem (going on for months) when streaming video or audio, and sometimes when gaming that I haven't been able to fix. I need some advice.

Here's a build intended to last a few years (except that it reuses the old GPU ‘til about $450 is available for a substantial GPU upgrade): http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kpr7K8

Is that economically efficient? I'd like to run several programs (photoshop, indesign, bridge, illustrator, chrome) simultaneously, so hyperthreading seems worthwhile (planning to replace the GPU by early February). A system with growth potential seems smart, but will issues with the GPU damage the new components (I don't know what's causing the stuttering)? I really need a new rig to work on ASAP, but $1,000 seems too low of a budget to include a decent GPU without also compromising heavily on other components.

Finally, it might be OK to limp by and overclock the fx6350 while also upgrading the GPU, but I'd still need a new case, cooling solutions, a new HD, mobo (and get stuck with poor CPU upgrade options), and copy of windows at least. What do you think makes sense?

couldnt squeeze the i7-5820k, so made a couple of tweaks to your build.

1) if you gpu isnt daming your current board theres no reason it would damage a new one. ive never heard of a case where a gpu caused damage. they just die and get replaced.

2) i can't recommend the proper gpu without knowing what games you play, what size screen you use, and the goal you have for fps (normally 60). $1000 would be sufficient for a system like this with a gpu if you are playing minecraft...

3) an i7 would substantially improve the programs you are using. an fx-6350 just cant compare and it won't hold up well with a newer, higher end gpu.

4) the 212 evo is not a sufficient cooler for an i7-4790k.

my recommendation is replace your system, get an i7-5820k processor and use your current gpu till you've saved for one that suites your needs better. the i7-5820k performs better with the tasks you do. it is a 6 core 12 thread processor. might be tough to budget with $1000 though.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I generally play at 1080p, ideally 60fps and eventually want to try newer games like FO4. A r390 equivelant-or-better is my goal gpu, I think.

I really appreciate your feedback. I'm looking into how big the gains are between the i7 5820k and i7 4970k, but this rig looks good and will get me back to work! Thanks again.
