Need help choosing a new CPU for gaming pc

i have this pc
GPU geforce gtx 970
AMD X6FX-6300 3.5GHZ
550wat power supply
Seagate 1 tb harddrive
Kingston X 16gb ram
my mother board is asus m5a78l-m lx3

I have had my current cpu for 3 years now and i need an upgrade but i dont know what i can get as i dont want to be spending alot but i also want to beable to use it for years to come.

I also dont know if i can only get surton types with the hardwhere i have so what im asking is what cpus can i get and i also want to get a new hard drive maby a 4tb one but i dont know how it works do i just install it and its starts writing in that harddrive of what so can you help

I'm not sure which CPU to recommend you since I dont know your mobo, I'd suggest i5 4460 CPU. Realy good in gaming, costs $179, and will be able to handle most of the games.

The problem with the AM3 socket is that it got left behind pretty quickly. I would reccomend an i5 or an i7 but neither of those will be doable for your motherboard. I'd have to let someone else chime in on here because I am not a huge AMD fan to begin with anymore. Since your not budget concious I would say go for the more expensive top of the line model CPU's and bite the bullet now because in the long run it will save you on cost. I just bumped up from an i5 to an i7 and I wish I'd have just stuck it out on the i7 price earlier on

if you want to use it for years to come, amd is not the way to go, get yourself an i5 4440, this will do you perfectly.

He cannot use an intel processor... the motherboard features an AM3 socket designed for the FX / Phenom II / Athlon II / Sempron 100 Series, etc.....

I dumped AMD way back in the early 2000's however for the AM3 socket and looking at benchmarks the FX8320 looks good and is about 140$, for more expensive the FX9590 looks to be about the best but it's almost 300$
