Microsoft says my win8 activation key is corrupted

I bought an HP Envy 15 a couple of years ago and got an extended warranty through Squaretrade. I have not used it much because it had hardware problems, needing to send it to Squaretrade after using it only a couple of times. I want to fix it up for my mother, but Squaretrade asks for the activation key, and Windows has been asking for that for a while, too. I believe that I needed to reactivate Windows after getting it back from Squaretrade and then Windows told me to do that again after installing 8.1.

Supposedly, I have my activation key, but it does not match the last six digits that Windows shows, and Windows does not accept it. After several calls to Microsoft, they said my key was corrupted, and I needed to call HP. HP said that my warranty was expired and I needed to pay them $35 + $15 monthly for them to talk to me, but the gentleman said that I could do it myself.

He said that reinstalling Windows would fix it.

It did not.

I followed the steps at "How to repair Windows 8/8.1 if system files are corrupted" at Parallels and it says that it fixed corrupted system files, but still says that my product key is invalid.

Where do I go from here? Thank you very much!

If your laptop came with 8.1, then the key is in the bios. If the motherboard was replaced at some point, of course the system would go haywire.

Can't really say much until you state the entire history of the laptop, as bullet points, including what was repaired.
