Assigning CPU Cores to Virtual Machines

If I were to purchase a PC with components that have 3x the performance of the components of each of three PCs, then could I just assign 1/3rd of my CPU cores to two Virtual Machines and receive the same performance on both the physical machine and the two Virtual Machines as I would on the three PCs?

Maybe. Virtualization is tricky. If you had graphics or I/O intensive chores, then physical would be better than virtual. Typical web or light server type things then virtualization is fine. You probably won't need 3X hardware. Maybe 2X in CPU but 3X in RAM.
