Right, so, I received 16GB of RAM for Christmas for my gaming build. I told my grandfather I wouldn't need more than 8, but he bought 2x8 for maybe $65-70 (1866Mhz). I didn't want him to spend more than necessary, so I was wondering: Is 16GB too much for only gaming (No video editing)? Is it "future proofing"? (again, 1866Mhz speed) Gonna be paired with a Gigabyte UD3P Mobo, GTX 950, and an AMD FX-8320.
Thanks alot!

It's not going to hurt to have extra. While generally 8Gb is rated as sufficient for most gaming needs, there's no guarantees that it'll be that way next week.

On top of that, it's a Christmas gift, so love the old man for going the extra mile, smile, and give him a hug, its more than you expected.

Oh, and 1866 is perfect for an AMD cpu, 1:1 working ratio, its Intel that officially supports 1600 tops.

Yeah, I told him I'd take it. Ha, he was telling me he got the 16 cause back in the day things would change so quickly. He was telling me about 200Mb hard drives that he bought for $300 or when Dell's 128Mb RAMBus was a crazy high amount.
Early days of computing are fascinating.
