Hello everyone,

I'm planning on build a home server mostly a VM host. My idea is to have multiple VM's for different purposes but mainly for:

  • Plex / Emby Server (1-2 users only, if that matters)
    MySQL Database
    Web Server
    NAS Server
Now, I currently have a computer with an Intel i5-4430 and I'm planning on purchasing a Xeon E3-1231 V3 which I also want your opinion on which one to use for my computer and which one to put on the home server. The main use for the computer is gaming/programming, so I want to have the better CPU on this computer either be the i5-4430 or the Xeon E3-1231 V3, the computer is not overclocked and has a dedicated GPU (GTX 970).

So with that in mind this is the setup I'm thinking of, I'm open for suggestions but I'm really trying to keep it lower than $550. Will this hold as a good VM host server?

Are you going to use ESXi? That does not handle nVidia graphivcs passthrough well. If you are using Xen or KVM that should work better but I heard nVidia lock GPU passthrough down so only Quadro have it.

  • Your main drive will be slow especially if you like to locate both your system, VM files and the data on it.
It's a slow 5400 RPM drive and you will almost get the lags and timeouts with Plex later.

I'll try to add more funds to purchase a cheap SSD for 64-128 Gb and locate OS and VM on it, and the data on the HDD drive.
You can find the previous generation Samsung Evo for the relatively cheap price now.

Other than that it's a good choice in my book.
You can also take a look here for more ideas what can you do with your own home Linux server by the way.
