I recently got a new cpu, I previously had a i5 4440s and got a i7 4790k. I have an Asus M11AD motherboard that is LGA1150, so it should be compatible. The problem is that when I turn it on, the motherboard lights up and all the fans are running, but nothing shows up on either of my monitors. I also just upgraded the BIOS because I was reading online that that could fix the problem, but it didn't. Everything still works if i put in my old cpu too. Also I have an Nvidia Geforce 680 gtx graphics card, 1 stick of 8 gb RAM, and 500W PSU.

Solution

I found out that the problem could be that even though the motherboard says it can handle the i7-4790k, the one I had was slightly different from the one on the Asus website because it was part of a manufactured unit from Asus. So while my motherboard, Asus H81M-A, is the same model as the one on their website it slightly varies and...

4 pin, and yes it is plugged in. Whenever I turn on my computer the motherboard does light up.

No, but wouldn't that just reset the BIOS to its original setting, which I already tried to install the new CPU with those original settings because I never upgraded my BIOS before, then when that didn't work I upgraded the BIOS to the current version and it still doesn't work.

Which bios update did you run? The m11ad board runs Haswell not Haswell refresh. If you just did the standard bios update, its possible you'll only be able to use Haswell cpus like an i7 4770. You'll need to do the Haswell to Haswell Refresh bios update. You will need to know the model of your motherboard, not the m11ad which is the model of the pc. Use speccy or just look at the board itself for this.

I used the program CPUID CPU-Z and it tells me that the motherboard is the M11AD, and also on Asus's website it has BIOS updates for the M11AD. In the description of the latest BIOS update it says, "Support new CPUs. " So when updated the BIOS I thought that this would solve the problem, but it did not. Here is the link to the Asus page, http://www.asus.com/us/Tower-PCs/M11AD/HelpDesk_Download/

Let me know if there is any other update that might be more recent for the Haswell Refresh because this is the latest update I could find.

I just found that the motherboard is specifically the H81M-A and found it on the Asus website. I found the latest update and put it on to a flash drive that has been changed to FAT32 for this BIOS update. When I went to update in the EZ update mode, after reading the file it said, "security verification failed". I then read online that it is possible that it would not take the update because even though the H81M-A is the same motherboard as the one that is in my PC, since my PC was a pre-built Asus model, the motherboards are slightly different and it won't allow me to update. Not sure where to go from here.

Contact Asus support directly. It's an Asus board, in an Asus pc, and seems to have an issue with an Asus updated bios. I believe you've exceeded the limits of what an owner is expected to be able to do, so this has become a technical issue and maybe they have a work around or other way of upgrading the bios, since Haswell boards are supposed to be Devil's Canyon compatible

I've literally got the same hardware as the OP (apart from my new Radeon R9 380 graphics card which works fine with my old i5 4440). I've got the same problem with the i7 4790k and no display. Everything seems to be working correctly and I've also tried all of the steps that the OP has gone through and no joy.

I'd quite like to hear what ASUS say if they manage to solve the problem if that's cool.

So while my motherboard, Asus H81M-A, is the same model as the one on their website it slightly varies and you cannot update to the Haswell Refresh because the BIOS update won't work for my motherboard. So unless you bought the motherboard by itself you cannot update the BIOS to the point of using the i7-4970k. I ended up buying an Asus Z-97A/USB 3.1 motherboard to fix the problem.

Ah I see. Yeah I thought it may be something to do with the motherboard. Mine is also part of a manufactured unit from ASUS so I guess upgrading the motherboard is the best solution.

Nice one, thanks for the help.
